MARQUETTE -- The City of Marquette, with help from the Lake Superior Community Partnership, is looking to make its mark on the state's bike scene.

Marquette is hoping to become one of four cities in Michigan to hold the designation as a bike-friendly community by the League of American Bicyclists.  Traverse City, Ann Arbor, and Grand Rapids already hold the honor.

Marquette plays host to the Superior Bike Festival and has multiple access to off-road and paved bike trails.

The designation would give credit to the city for its work and awareness about the importance of cycling.

"I think it really recognizes Marquette as a progressive community that has a lot of time, money, and energy into creating a community that really cares about issues like sustainable transportation, healthy citizens, and a variety of recreational activities for its citizens," said Sarah Anderson of the LSCP.

They hope to hear back April 1 if they've been chosen to move forward with the application process.
