DELTA COUNTY -- It's a winter sports enthusiast’s playground out there with all the snow we've gotten over the past few weeks.  And to promote even more people to enjoy the outdoors this winter, the Hiawatha National Forest is taking part in the National Winter Trails Day this weekend for the second year in a row.

One local business is making sure those without equipment don't miss out.  Mike Williams, owner of Brampton Bike and Ski in Gladstone, is hoping to get more people out and about this winter.  Whether it be by cross country skis or by snowshoes, Williams will provide free gear to those who take part in the National Winter Trails Day at the Rapid River Ski Trail this weekend.

Williams is offering the free services because of the success of last year's turnout.

"Ultimately it helped sell a few packages here and there," said Williams.  "There was one family, just the typical three teenagers, and they were all so different from one another and to go see them get out there and all of them have a good time and want to get out again was probably what pushed me in that direction."

National Winter Trails Day has been celebrated across the nation for 15 years.  Although it's only the second year the Hiawatha National Forest ski trail in Rapid River has taken part, interest is growing.

"We had an excellent turnout last year; about 175 people we had come out," explained Assistant District Ranger, Anne Okonek.  "We had a beautiful day, and we're hoping for the same thing this year, but in the event it is a little chilly, we're going to have a bonfire and going to have hot drinks for people to stay warm."

For those wanting to take part in Saturday's activities, you're asked to pre-register at Brampton Bike and Ski by this Friday.  You can do so by calling (906) 428-2135.

The events at the ski trail on Saturday will run from 12 until 4 p.m.
