FORSYTH TOWNSHIP -- With winter now upon us in full swing, snowmobilers are hitting the trails daily.

To make sure that riders stay safe, the Marquette County Sheriff's Department and the Forsyth Township Snowmobile Club teamed up to host a snowmobile safety class.

Fifteen kids from age 12 to 16 spent Saturday afternoon learning about the laws, proper clothing, and maintenance for the sport.

Organizers say hosting the classes each season is vital for keeping riders safe.

"It's very important to educate snowmobile riders, but snowmobile class isn't just for youth; it's for all persons that are riding snowmobiles, but we want to make sure that they're safe and responsible to prevent accidents," said Corporal Errol Lukkarinen of the Marquette County Sheriff's Department.

The Sheriff's department will be holding one more class later this month in Marquette.
