BARAGA CO. -- A L'Anse man accused of nearly beating his ex-girlfriend's infant daughter to death was arraigned in Baraga County court Tuesday morning.

Twenty-six-year-old James Todd Cribbs II is facing a felony charge of child abuse in the first degree for an alleged assault on a 17-month-old baby last September.  If convicted, Cribbs could spend up to 15 years in prison.

The baby's injuries left her partially paralyzed.

"The child was seriously, severely injured," said Baraga County Prosecutor Joseph O'Leary.  "She came very close to dying.  The injuries include subdural hematoma and retinal hemorrhaging. They were so serious that she was bounced from hospital to hospital."

Bond was set at $500,000 with the condition that Cribbs have no contact with children under 18.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 12.
