ESCANABA -- Plans to fix up Stephenson Avenue in Escanaba may be moving forward in the next few weeks.

The city is applying for a $750,000 grant through the MEDC to help fund the project.

At Friday night's meeting, the council approved moving ahead with the application.

The city plans to completely renovate the road from infrastructure to resurfacing it.  The project will run on Stephenson Avenue from Ludington Street to the Y at Washington Avenue and Sheridan Road.

The entire project is estimated to cost about $1.8 million.  The grant would help fund a big chunk of it.  The city, along with other secured grants, will help fund the rest.

"About nine blocks needs to be completely rebuilt with all new infrastructure, and flat work, curbing, sidewalks, bike paths and street surface," explained Jim O'Toole, City Manager.

Officials hope to hear if they received the money by next month, with hopes to begin the project next spring.

Where's all the small government tea party people when something like this comes up?

I'd expect to be hearing someone howl "Socialized Highways are killing innovation in this country!!!!!"
