MARQUETTE -- Captain and conservationist Paul Watson is speaking in Marquette Tuesday night. You might recognize his name from a popular Animal Planet show, Whale Wars.
The show features Watson with a volunteer crew trying to disable Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.
He is the head of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. They have sunk pirate whaling ships, disrupted seal hunts, and halted the slaughter of dolphins just to name a few their efforts.
He is speaking at NMU about the importance of conserving one of the worlds most vital resource: the ocean.
"The situation in the oceans has become very, very serious," explained Watson. "Almost every single commercial fishery is in a state of collapse. Jacques Cousteau said before he died, 'The oceans are dying in our time and we have to do everything we can do to protect them because if the oceans die.... we die.'"
The presentation gets underway at 7 p.m. in the Great Lakes Room. It's free to students and two dollars for non-students.
