NEGAUNEE -- TV6 has been helping feed the needy for over 25 years.

The annual Canathon officially kicks off on Monday, November 9, but Friday morning, students at Negaunee Middle School and members of the United Steelworkers Union 4974, loaded nonperishable food donations onto a truck from the Salvation Army in Ishpeming.

Donations are collected in ten upper Michigan counties, and all the food collected stays within the various communities.

"It's very important.  It's the holiday season and some people aren't quite so fortunate to have everything that they need, and we like to help out, and I think it sends a good message to the children and I think it's good for the community as well," said John Tasson of the United Steelworkers.

The Canathon runs through Thursday, December 3.

Last year the TV6 Canathon collected about 111,000 pounds of food.

Thank You TV6 for everything you put back in our community. I don't think people appreciate your efforts and I understand you all go above and beyond this time of year to help those in need. Great job.
