EASTERN U.P. -- A trail camera photo of a cougar in the eastern Upper Peninsula has been verified by the Department of Natural Resources.

Officials have confirmed that the trail cam photo is from an area near Bruce Township.

In addition, two sets of prints were positively identified as cougar tracks in the Detour and Gulliver areas.

The image from the trail cam has been under investigation since late October.

They were able to verify the spot comparing camera angles and vegetation.

Experts had thought the big cats had been out of the Upper Peninsula since the early 1900s, but recent evidence shows that they are making a return.
