Alger County voting results

Posted by A Resident in Alger County, Alger County - Wednesday, November 04, 2009 at 6:31 p.m.

Yay!! Fantastic to see that the majority in Alger county voted down the proposal to increase our property taxes! I was one of them! GOOD GOING RESIDENTS!!!

The People have TRULY spoken.

Posted by Grateful Citizen, Negaunee - Wednesday, November 04, 2009 at 1:54 p.m.

The good citizens of Negaunee were able to voice their concerns Tuesday. Take note Mr Peterson and Mr Thomas...the people want their streets plowed, and their homes and lives protected by the fire department and police. When the economy was at it's worst, somehow, the city manager convinced the council to spend like drunken sailors. How did we go from millions in our general fund down to being "broke" (that is the mayors words and the city managers agreement). Crystal Falls did the right thing by throwing out their city manager for financial mismanagement. When almost everyone was watching what they spent over the past two years during the biggest economic crisis since the Great Depression, the city did not. Now the city manager is looking to cut more employees, notably the police department, yet he STILL wants to expand Old "Hole in Ground" Towne. Yes, it's interesting...once, maybe even twice, but it is NOT an attraction that is going to bring in people like he claims. Now Negaunee needs to do what Marquette did...send him home and save $124,000/yr. By the way, that's 1 million dollars in 8 years. How long will it take the rest of us to make that much money (oh, and remember, he's "part time").

Thank You For Your Service

Posted by Dave Guizzetti, Chocolay Township - Wednesday, November 04, 2009 at 12:23 p.m.

Whether you agree with the recall of the Marquette Township Trustees or not, I think that those Trustees should be thanked for their willingness to serve the people of their community.

While I don't know all of the recalled Trustees, I do know Linda Winslow, and I know that Mrs. Winslow had/has a strong sense of loyalty and duty to the people of Marquette Township, as I'm sure did all the Trustees.

Residents on both sides of the recall effort should pause a moment and actually thank these Trustees for giving of their time to do what they thought best for their community. Being in public service is much more than attending a meeting or two every month. There are countless phone calls from the citizens during dinner, hours and hours of reading and research, and constraints on time and family.

It's very easy to complain about the job our local elected officials are doing, but let's remember, these folks aren't career politicians. They do this because they're genuinely invested in their communities, and their willingess to serve others is to be appreciated and commended. This appreciation should be extended to all local elected officials who give of themselves every day.

Recall & Referendum

Posted by Robert Juidici, Negaunee - Wednesday, November 04, 2009 at 10:48 a.m.

The ability of the people to remove their elected officials from office is a vital component to our system of government. It is no less important than the people's right to seek a referendum on any particular issue. We currently have numerous members of the Senate and the House of Representatives that consistently support legislation that is vigorously opposed by their constituents. There is no right of recall when this occurs under the US Constitution. So, before you condemn this process, think.

Nuts

Posted by A Yooper, Yooperville - Wednesday, November 04, 2009 at 10:31 a.m.

I cannot believe anybody voted to add to the cost of the 911 service in Meno. Co. We already pay nearly twice as much as our neighboring counties, where does that money go, and why does it cost so much to run this program in Meno. Co.?

This is good news for the CITY of Negaunee

Posted by Negaunee resident, Negaunee - Wednesday, November 04, 2009 at 9:43 a.m.

Jim Thomas not getting re-elected is good news for the City of Negaunee. Now you will have members of the City Council who will focus on the city as a whole and not just how decisions made by the council can benefit "Old Towne" and the Iron Ore Herritage Trail. In watching council meetings, that seemed to be his only concern!

recalls misused

Posted by Dan Adamini, Marquette - Tuesday, November 03, 2009 at 9:26 p.m.

Yes... there have been too many recalls. The law is good, but it assumes people are sensible enough to only use the recall when an elected official acts inappropriately - not when you disagree with a decision. Too many people have become like children who get angry when they don't get their way.

A passionate fool can stir up the masses if they don't think clearly for themselves. The problem isn't the law, it's the angry children who don't get their way, and the small minded who follow them.

Finally!

Posted by C L, Negaunee - Tuesday, November 03, 2009 at 8:26 p.m.

I am very happy to see that others are fed up with the recalls. It seems that recalls are being tossed around left and right lately. We elect these people and they are not always going to vote the way that we want them to. Voice your displeasure, don't go to the extreme of starting a recall. I think that we are going to eventually scare our elected officials into not doing anything because they are afraid of being recalled.

recalls in the UP have gotten out of control

Posted by Mark Ett, Marquette - Tuesday, November 03, 2009 at 5:23 p.m.

people will whine no matter what happens. recalls are being used to get even with grudges or by backwoods pitch fork raising yoopers who didn't get their way. these people were voted in under the idea that there will serve their term. Get over and and get out and vote next time.

Marquette Township VOTE NO to the recall

Posted by Smartest Person, Marquette Township - Tuesday, November 03, 2009 at 4:35 p.m.

Vote NO to the recall! Keep the people that were elected where they belong!

Save recalls for people that break the law, not people that vote the way you don't want them to. Just because a person votes for something you don't believe in does not mean they did something wrong!

Also if you vote yes for the recall you do not get to pick the replacments...the people left on the board pick the replacments!
