SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY -- Some Schoolcraft County citizens want their sheriff out of office. A petition to recall Schoolcraft County Sheriff Grant Harris was filed on Friday.
The petition language reads, "The Sheriff has failed to mediate a budget in a timely manner...lied to the County Board of Commissioners about the undersheriff's schedule, which has created excessive overtime, resulting in the blatant misuse of taxpayers money."
The petition comes after failed mediation attempts between the board and sheriff over recent budget cuts to the Sheriff's department.
The cuts include trimming the undersheriff's position from full time to part time and cutting the secondary road patrol operations in the county. The sheriff is appealing the board's decision.
Harris told TV6 the recall language is false and is disappointed members of the petition committee didn't come to him first.
The board chairperson, Jerry Zellar, feels the petition shows the peoples' support for the board's decision and their stance on this issue.
The language must be approved for the petition to move forward. A hearing is scheduled for November 10.
