WELLS TOWNSHIP -- The Michigan State Police at the Negaunee Post are asking for the public's help in tracking down a suspect in an alleged assault that took place Monday night in Wells Township.

The suspect, identified by police as William Joseph Griggs, allegedly talked his way into the home of a 64-year-old woman.  She told police that he then grabbed her and threw her to the floor.

The woman was able to grab a hammer and defend herself.  Griggs then fled the house.

He is described at a white male, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, 175 pounds, hazel eyes, long brown hair with an unshaven face.

Anyone who may know his whereabouts are asked to contact the Michigan State Police Post in Negaunee.

innocent until proven guilty

Posted by mary eggemeyer, illinois - Friday, November 06, 2009 at 9:31 a.m.

I have known this guy all his life and there is no way he is guilty of this. What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty. The media and everyone else gets in such a hurry to make someone out to be a monster when they dont even have all the facts. This guy is not the monster he is made out to be.I beleive when it is all over and he is proven innocent the media should put a story out there of his innocence for the entire country to see.

i wonder

I know this guy and I don't think that he would do something like this. I know the other person as well and there are other issues that the press has not written about. I just hope that when this is over they report what really happened. I think that if you are going to report news before the facts are all there then when all is said and done they should report what really happened.

I agree

If someone broke into my house, they wouldnt like the greeting. With the economy the way it is, this only going to get way worse. I'm suprised in lower Mich. their not rioting/luding yet.

Break into my house please !

Let me get this straight you break into a house grabb an elderly woman , throw her down to the floor and she beats the crap out of you with a hammer , Nice ! Hey lets see if this guy was reacently released from prison due to budget cut backs. If not lets send him to prison so he can get out way to early so he can victimize someone who cant defend themselves , Nice ! Hey coward, come break into my house or one of my neibors houses. The tax payers of the great State of Michigan won't have to worry about spending a penny on you for your incarceration. Storys like this are becoming more and more common place in the U.P. Soon Marshall Law will be in full effect. Thats sounds kind of drastic but if the State does nothing to punish cowards like this guy what kind of message does it sends to scum bags like this . We need to get tough and stay tough on crime to protect are communities from trash like this, Honestly.
