NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP -- The "Cash for Clunkers" program means greener cars on the road and more green for salvage and scrap yards across the country.

Superior Auto Parts on US-41 in Negaunee Township will take apart a total of 240 cars through the program.  They'll salvage the used parts, then crush the rest for scrap metal.

"It should be a record year for us," said owner, William Grill.  "We've added two employees actually because of this program, and they should be here for a year."

Grill says they salvage 30 percent to 80 percent of the car before scrapping it for iron.

Right now they can get $120 a ton for the scrap iron, which Reliable Recycling in Green Bay will process, then send to steel mills.  Next month the price will drop to $100 a ton.

The additional cars total 70 percent of the salvage yard's annual business.

Superior Auto Parts buys around 350 used cars a year, getting one million dollars in parts revenue from those vehicles.

"The thing that will help is it just gave us a terrific shot on inventory," Grill said.  "I mean we got a year's worth of inventory inside of two months."

Nearly half the cars Superior Auto Parts picked up through the program have 60,000 miles on them.  So, people looking for a used transmission or any other car part will find it easier now that these clunkers have been scrapped.

To ensure that vehicles traded-in under "Cash For Clunkers" will not be resold by dealers, the program outlines a procedure for destructively disabling the engine (and thus also precluding the possibility that any mechanical engine components might be salvaged to be used in the repair of any other vehicles): The motor oil is drained and replaced with a sodium silicate solution, then the engine is started and run until the solution, becoming glass-like when heated, causes engine internals to abrade and ultimately seize.[36] In addition, the salvage or scrap facility which acquires the vehicle cannot sell any powertrain components from the scrap vehicle. This includes the disabled engine (most specifically the long block components), the transmission/transaxle, and in some cases the axle assemblies. The salvage or scrap facility can sell any other component from the scrap vehicle until they are ready to crush and/or shred the vehicle. The salvage or scrap facility has 180 days to ultimately crush and/or shred the vehicle.

These clunkers were suppose to be melted down, not to be used for parts, unless the laws were changed...

Every part of every clunker can be sold by a junk yard except the engine and trans. So if you need parts for your car buy them now. In another year low income and mid income people will have to struggle to buy a used car thanks to this great Obama plan. So buy the junk yard parts and make sure your car will last a long time or you will be walking. Obama will succeed in making America into the next third world socialist country. Welcome to the new USSA

A little more info

Scott
I was wrong in part. They cannot reuse any of the drive train parts. THAT INCLUDES TRANSMISSIONS. I looked more into it. Body panels, lights, and interior parts only. No engines, transmissions, water pumps, or any engine accessory. After hearing the storys of how much fun the dealers had. Anybody should ask lots of questions when buying a used part. If they can't provide proof of where it came from. DONT BUY IT

Here is what i read on what the dealers are required to do.

A: The car will be sent to the salvage yard. Some parts may be kept but the engine and drive-train must be destroyed. Specifically the engine will be injected with a liquid glass solution to permanently disable the engine and it will be the responsibility of the dealer to make sure this is done to the engine.

I read it here http://www.cashforclunkersfacts.com/bill-faq/

I hope that clears it up for those who did not know.

scrap is down.

I believe your mistaken Scott E.

As for buying a good used transmission. This I found funny. I seen how the dealers beat the heck out of those cars trying to get those engines to blow up. Looked to be a lot of fun.

They can't do that

Um you can't use these cars for salvage they are to be shredded not salvaged. The whole deal was for not only jobs for the auto makers but jobs for the part manufacturers. Hope you don't get busted for this.

Should of did it like the houses

Like the houses it should have been for first time NEW car buyers. How many people in this country have never owned a new car? All that did was to let the rich people get rid of an old plow truck they had for a new car. Most of the people that took advantage of this could afford to get a new car when ever they please. There should have been no time limit and only for first timers. So what if a student just graduating ten years from now took advantage of the program.

Your right Rock n Roll

It already has been causing the cost of used cars to rise, making my car worth more. The problem is when low income people need to buy a car they won't be able to afford anything but real junk. I'm sure the next car I buy used is going to cost me a couple thousand more than I normally would have spent. So the poor get poorer, great stimulus.

The problem with socialism.........................................

Well they are not saving the motors , they pour acid into them so they cant be re-used. All this did was give people that weren't hurting a chance to buy a car and short term rev up the economy for some better numbers for Mr o and in turn it is gonna raise used car's and used car prices for all those who couldn't get a new one , thanks for giving it to us when we were down!!!!!!
