MARQUETTE -- The City of Marquette, Tuesday, was presented with the first ever "Outstanding Achievement Award" for its asset management of city roadways.

"When you have a road system - a local or state road system - and you've got public dollars that have been dedicated towards that, basically it boils down to applying the right fix at the right place at the right time," says Roger Safford of the Michigan Department of Transportation.

That same road construction that causes headaches for motorists is earning the City of Marquette recognition.

The Michigan Transportation Asset Management Council gave Marquette the award for its foresight in repairing its roads and its underground utilities at the same time.

"It doesn't make a lot of sense to make an improvement on roads when your underground utilities are in bad shape.  Believe it or not, they're one of the only communities in the entire state - that we know of at least - that is combining that.  And that's something we're trying to get more communities to think about when they're making these capital investments," says Carmine Palombo of the Michigan Transportation Asset Management Council.

Marquette Mayor John Kivela says that the city appreciates the honor:

"I think anyone driving around over the last few months noticed how many roads we had torn up in Marquette.  And although it's kind of an inconvenience, it shows that we're being proactive in getting things done.  So I think it recognizes the hard work that we've put into it as a Commission and as a staff."

I'm in MQT once a week for business. I know exactly what street you are talking about. Washington Street is a hard street to miss in MQT. And because something is a certain way for 50 years and it gets changed, and you don't personally like it, it doesn't mean it was wrong. There are professionals that deal with transportation and road issues daily. Are you a transportation planner or engineer?
Ignorance: the lack of knowledge or education. Pretty bold for you to assume I don't know where Washington Street is !!

Don't you put words in my mouth. You obviously don't travel the street I commented on. Ignorace is not MY problem.

@ C Thompson - depending on the maintenance type, it could extend the life of the road anywhere from 5 to 7 years. Its alot cheaper than a reconstruct.

Mary Smyth - Obviously you are one of the many complainers that are never happy with anything. You would rather a major street with local businesses fall apart and look and function horribly? I guess you'd be happy with Washington Street being gravel. People like you amaze me - complain that the road is poor, complain that they fix it, then complain for no reason afterwards. Construction hindered business for a short time..get over it and get over yourself. Roads need to be fixed, whether or not your little business is on it. How people like you don't understand that is beyond me.

I was in Cleveland Ohio last summer for a conference, and they had a large portion of their downtown tore up to fix roads. It was a mess, but when I returned this summer everybody loved it.

Award?

They screwed up Washington St, making it impossible for traffic to enter out of a business drive. They get an award for that? I should have a wall of awards if they are handed out for bad Decisions.

I do like the improved roads. How long will these improved roads last? Places like Lincoln street seem like a quick fix, patch job. Will it last a while?
