MUNISING -- More schools are closing due to illness and low attendance numbers.

Late this afternoon we received several calls from schools that will be closing their doors this week.

Most schools will be shutting their doors and disinfecting surfaces.

School officials in Munising are blaming the flu for wiping out a quarter of the district's student body.

Tuesday, it was quiet in the halls of Munising High School as students take a break from the classroom to recover from suspected-flu symptoms.

Custodial staff will be spending the rest of the week sanitizing the buildings.

"We hope that with the fact that they've been out for five days, hopefully the flu has run its course and they'll come back to a disinfected building," explains Philip DeGabriele, Auxiliary Services Director.

Although students were the majority of those calling in sick, the district did have several teachers out as well.

Schools on the list so far include:

  • Hancock
  • Holy Spirit
  • Father Marquette
  • Munising
  • Norway-Vulcan
  • Ontonagon
  • Superior Central
  • Tahquamenon

what i dont get

everyone catches the flu EVERY YEAR. so why are they closing schools because SOME students have the flu? isnt it public knowledge that yes, if you send your kid to school they are more exposed to yucky bacteria and virus matter? tis the season. shut up about the swine flu. its just an insane media scare tactic. in fact, by statistics, its less deadly than the flu suffered every year previous to this one.

My sympathies to your children....

If the virus mutates, yes you can get it again. And for the record I wasn't whining, I was stating that it would have been smarter to close all of the schools and let all of the kids get healthy. There was no whine there. And yes it was heartbreaking to watch my child so sick, it is called compassion. Thank goodness you aren't my mother! I send your children my sympathies.

Can't get it twice

Flu viruses mutate each year, but the general concensus is that you would not be able to get H1N1 again this year, so quit your whining. You child was sick, many are sick, be thankful that your child is recovered and didn't die. Think of it - your child was sick, it was heartbreaking to watch but now your child has immunity and you don't have to worry. You are lucky.

joys of swine flu

Posted by Northern Student, Marquette - Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 4:08 a.m.

I'm not sure how, but I have the impression (possibly false) that Houghton/Hancock have h1n1 more than marquette does. My fiance and all three of his roommates are sick, and have been for a week. Their entire building, with the exception of one apartment, is infected. That's like nine apartments, 2 to 4 ppl in each. One of his roommates went to the ER b/c he was in so much pain from coughing after a week and they could only give him codine. So it sounds BAD there, but Marquette, at Northern, my classes have good attendance, no one's coughing. This is like a little oasis. But my younger sister, at Gwinn High School, was in the office as an aide and in that one hour four or five students came in wanting to go home w/ flu symptoms. I guess they had normal attendance last week, but if it's that bad this suddenly, they should be closing too. They should act sooner rather than later when even more kids are sick and spreading it. Slow the spread now!

You could very possibly get it again...

Get it and get it over with sounds like a great idea, but just because you get it once you are not immune to it. You could very possibly get it again.

And watching my six year old with it, you don't want your kids to get it. He was one sick kid and there was nothing I could do to help him. It was heartbreaking!

Flu

Yes, you continue to send your kids to activities! I had the flu and my kids never got it. Shutting the schools down might help stop the spread, but there will be waves of this and as a parent, I would just hope my kids get it and get it over with.

Absolutely!

Here, here, Mom K. An excellent idea. I have kids in the Houghton SD, and I worry about bringing MTU germs to them, them to their classmates, back the other way, etc. So far no sick kids in the house, but why take that chance? Excellent suggestion.

Close all of the area schools!

Wouldn't they be smarter to close all of the schools in Houghton-Keweenaw, almost like a snow day, and be done with it? All of these kids interact with one another outside of school. My youngest is sick, but so far my oldest is healthy. So, do I send my healthy one to hockey, with the possibility that he could be spreading germs to kids from Houghton? If the flu is bad enough to close one school, close them all, disinfect them all, let the kids get healthy and be done with it.

But Tech probably won't close

I am getting notice after notice from the administration of kids out with flu, student attendance is plummeting in my classes, and they canceled MTU's Safe House because of flu concerns. So when will they actually cancel school and do the five day stay-at-home quarantine that the Health Department is recommending? I'd guess "never." I hope they (and the Houghton SD) become proactive and close down for a few days to stop the spread of this flu.

Wow

Yeah, Houghton, including the college, and Hancock are being hit pretty dang hard with the flu. It's not cool.
