LANSING -- Education is taking another hit as the budget battle goes on in Lansing.

In the Upper Peninsula, that means the Republic-Michigamme School District is losing money.

This time Governor Granholm has vetoed K-12 school aid payments to school districts that get among the highest per-pupil payments statewide.

The cut will cost 39 districts about $51.6 million.  For Republic-Michigamme, they'll lose $37,224.

Burt Township Schools lost nearly $12,000 in these most recent cuts.

Common Sense

Posted by Kristina Koski, Republic, Michigan - Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at 4:24 p.m.

Lets Use Some Common Sense people! Why does a a K-12 school exist? Because the population is small in that area. People leave these areas because of the lack of jobs!!! Is this fair that the only school now located in the far west end of Marquette county has to suffer? Bottom line is our state is cutting their budget....and low and behold now our school district is going to suffer. My children (3 & 5) are going to have to be bussed 30 minutes to another school district if this continues. The state should STOP taking funds away from education...That should be illegal! Our children are mandated to be educated by the state! Time for state employees to take a pay cut!! Cut your budget right where you sit Grandholm....If she gets voted into office for another term you voters out there are stupid!

There's more to this story...

There are currently no good solutions to school funding. This article fell short of informing the public that this round of cuts to the schools are hitting the 39 districts in the state that receive the most per-pupil funding (sometimes up to more than $4000 per student than other districts receive). I am sad to see cuts made for any district, including this one--but please, inform the public of the whole story.

A shame!

It is a shame that the children lose out in the long run by having school funding cut so much. Who's fault is it? Go look in the mirror! EVERYONE votes against tax increases and millages. Where do you think the state gets its money? This is the menatality that "money grows on trees"! Taxes have been around forever, that is how government runs. The "smartest" comment (and I am being sarcastic) that I ever heard at a meeting of a government body regarding tax increases was this. Someone stood up, took the microphone and stated "Let the government pay for it!" Come on, he was serious! Again, where does the government get the money to run a state? Maybe the schools should start charging each student to attend! Other states pay tuition PLUS the taxes!
