L'ANSE -- The US Department of Housing and Urban Development has just announced that it will finance the $28.3 million project to build a new facility for Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

The loan will be made through HUD's hospital mortgage insurance program aimed at helping health care facilities in small communities.

The new hospital is expected to add to patient convenience with in-and-out patient services; physicians and clinics all located in the same building.  The 71,000 square foot facility will also feature a satellite location of a local retail pharmacy.

Crews have started clearing the site which is a few miles east of the current location on US-41.

"We were very fortunate that after a long revue and a real, hard look by HUD that we qualified for this program," said John Tembreull, Hospital Administrator.

Crews will officially break ground for the project next spring.

The hospital should be completed by July 2011.

New Baraga County Memorial Hospital

I lived in the Copper Country area until the early 1990's, with my parents having been patients at the current hospital on several occasions during the 1980's. The facility was, by most standards, somewhat antiquated, even back then. So this development, despite some detractors out there to the contrary, is (in my opinion) rather long overdue. Best wishes to the hospital folks in making this a reality.

Baraga nay sayers

How will the construction of a hospital in Baraga Co. lead to people losing their jobs? Some people continually see the most negative scenarios! If you are dissatisfied with life in Baraga Co. perhaps you might be better off moving elsewhere.

These are not the long term answers for economic viability. Sure, they provide good jobs and are great for communities but more needs to be done to get other sources of revenue into the UP. We cannot soley depend on schools and hospitals as the major employers in so many areas. These organizations are designed to support other industries and people in areas.

too bad

While an upgraded is needed for BCMH it's just too bad there won't be anybody left in Baraga County to enjoy this new hospital.

I am concerned about the new hospital. Lots of people are, and have lost their jobs because of this...
