UPPER PENINSULA -- A Schoolcraft County woman is jailed on five felony counts for drug possession.

According to the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement team, the 50-year-old St. Jaques resident was arrested Wednesday evening.

The charges include three counts of delivery of cocaine, one count delivery of marijuana, and one count of delivery of prescription drugs.

Her arrest is the result of a search warrant conducted on her home.  Agents found more than $14,000 in cash, marijuana, mushrooms, prescription drugs, and evidence of drug sales.

The suspect remains lodged in the Schoolcraft County jail; her name has not been released pending arraignment.

Meanwhile, two more people have been taken into custody in a lengthy drug bust sweep.  One in Menominee County...that person is charged with possession with intent to delivery marijuana; the other in Marquette County for two counts of delivery of heroin and two counts to deliver heroin.

This brings to 33 the number of suspects arrested and lodged on arrest warrants by UPSET and the FBI over the past two weeks.

Dozens of arrest warrants are still pending.

Response to "Concerned Mother"

The gaping difference in that argument is:
If a drug addict ingests, smokes, snorts or shoots up drugs it is his/her own free will. Yes, it is their body. They are doing what they choose with it.
In the case of abortion, if women's choices and rights are taken away they are then controlled and told what to do with their body.
There is a difference.
By making drugs illegal people are not being controlled in a life altering way and having rights taken away from them concerning their body.
Abortion effects mainly the female and in some cases the male, depending on circumstances.
Drug abuse isn't limited to the person who is choosing to do whatever with their own body. The reach of abuse and the effects are far wider.

Bigger Problem

Posted by Lori UP, Marquette - Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at 9:30 a.m.

Punishments need to be much more harsh on criminals and a lot of crime rates would fall.
Whether it is for drugs, child abuse, theft, robbery, murder, etc. Punishments are far too lenient and our judicial system has gotten too liberal.
I agree that the drug problem will never go away, however, I would not want drugs legalized! That's irresponsible thinking.

Concerned Mother

FYI, I've never used any hard drug, never used marijuana, never abused prescription drugs, and rarely drink any alcohol.

So, if a woman can have a fetus killed because she doesn't want to have to deal with it, under the argument that "its her body", why should it be illegal for an adult to place whatever substance they want in their body, since it is THEIR body?

I think it's hypocritical to use the "it's my body" excuse when it suits what you want, but to dismiss that argument when it doesn't.

FYI, I don't think the federal government has any place in banning abortions either.

what do we do

it seems like this problem just will not go away america has sacraficed a great deal of our freedom, money, blood, sweat, tears, and very little if any progress has been made so what do we do keep passing laws until amercans have no freedom left, have us spying on each other so that no one can be trusted, start mass executions of drug user/dealers,maybe torture of suspects is the way to win the drug war, well i believe if we keep this war on drugs going all that i described above will happen before its over but maybe i am wrong hope so but doubt it. i just had a thought maybe the way to win this war is mom and a dad, a school that lets god in, a family around the dinner table as grace is said,a love for each other just because we are all human,i don't know if thats the solution but it can't be any worse than what has been done so far.

Not legalize the hard stuff

Posted by Concerned Mother, Marquette - Sunday, October 18, 2009 at 3:33 a.m.

Coke, meth and heroin-type heavy drugs are extremely addictive, unlike alcohol, which is much less so.

The reason they're so illegal is because no one in society feels like dealing with addicts who say they love you one minute and think you're out to get them the next minute. Extreme mood swings and all that.

I think medicinal marijuana is a good alternative in the face of people self-medicating with real bad stuff.

But the hard drug users, screw it, it's a jungle out there and worse when they're on stuff. They were warned every day of their lives not to be stupid and take the hard stuff. Now they're toothless fools.

S W, you compare it to abortion. Thanks for illustrating the gutter you live in. No, really, I'm being sarcastic. No thank you to your jive-assed world of hard drugs.

The laws against driving while under the influence would still apply, as they do now with alcohol.

It's legal to get drunk, as long as you don't drive.
Why should drugs be any different? Why does the government get to control what YOU put in YOUR body?
Or have you given in to the belief that the government controls you? If the government controls you, then you no longer have personal freedom.

The war on drugs is a failure. Just like prohibition was a failure. The only difference is, they realized it with alcohol and got rid of the ban.

Legalizing drugs would instantly get rid of drug related gangs. The value of such drugs would instantly crash, and the drug lords would have no product to push since they'd be legal.

Have you heard about all the violence happening in Mexico as that country tries to go after the drug lords? Why is that?
Because:
A) Americans want their drugs, legal or not.
B) Because they're not legal, the price of drugs is in some cases 1,000 times the cost of what they would be if they were legal.
C) Seeing a motive to make massive profits, the drug lords begin bringing drugs to the U.S.
D) Since they can't ask for police protection, they must supply their own security, and fight the police if they wish to stay in business.

make them do the time

Posted by R T, UP - Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 3:36 p.m.

Everyone talks about the waste of money, well i agree, but if they wouldnt slap some of these people on the wrist and let them go about their businss, then yes it is a waste. Put them in jail, and make them do thier time (ALL of thier TIME) then they can pay through the prison, it might make things a little more equal. money wise. These people need to do the time.

Why should the goverment tell people what they can do to thier body?? what if that person spends all day smoking dope, get in a car, crashes into a car carrying your family and kills them all? It's illegal and thats it.

What if someone sits and drinks alcohol all day, gets into a car and kills somebody? Would this be ok then because alcohol is legal? Everything in life has its good and bad points.

Oh Good - Now no one will ever do drugs again

Posted by Ann Nonamiss, Iron Mountain - Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 2:29 p.m.

What a waste of money! If they want to do dope - GIVE THEM A HANDFULL OF IT AND LET THEM DO IT.

No amount of money will ever stop this problem - EVER.

If they destroyed all the dope in the world - they would sniff gasoline or glue or drink cleaning fluid or something.

If someone wants to destroy themselves - NOTHING WILL STOP THEM.

Nice.

More "criminals" being made from the government trying to control what a person can do to their own body.

I often wonder, if all abortion advocates would support eliminating drug laws.... Since they use the argument that it's a womans body, and they should be able to do what they want, doesn't the same hold true for drugs?

If anyone supports abortion, but is against legalizing drugs, they must be hypocrites

Drug War

End the drug war, it's a huge waste of time and money and also violates basic civil rights. http://www.americanviolet.com/ http://leap.cc/cms/index.php
