SOUTH RANGE -- Students across the country are learning about fire prevention this week.
On Monday, students at South Range Elementary School participated in a full day of activities with help from local fire departments.
“Stop drop and roll” is just one safety phrase the students learned.
"’Get out and stay out’... it means once you're out, you don't go back in," said third grader, Justin Mattila.
This is the fifth year that volunteers from the South Range, Adams Township and Toivola Fire Departments, as well as the Adams Township First Responders, visited the school for a full day of learning about fire prevention.
From preschool to the sixth grade, all students got a chance to tour the fire trucks, look at heat signatures on a thermal imaging camera, and play in fire-stopping foam.
"The foam stuff, that helps it get out faster,” said third grader, Joslyn Reed. “I’ve never heard of that before."
But before the kids got to play in the foam and explore the fire trucks, they got to see firsthand what it might be like to escape a fiery building.
Earlier in the day, the school hallways were filled with smoke and the students were instructed to get down on their hands and knees and crawl to safety.
"Worst case scenario is if a child really did wake up and their room was on fire, I would hope these skills would come back to them," said Principal Kim Harris.
In addition to fire safety, the kids learned about other emergency situations with an extraction demonstration by the Hurontown Fire and Rescue team.
They also received goody bags with more information about fire safety that they'll discuss in class throughout the week.
