IRON RIVER -- A five-year-old child from Iron River is dead after an ORV accident over the weekend.

State Police say 36-year-old Kimberly Lewis from Larsen, Wisconsin was traveling with the five-year-old on AMVETS Highway in Iron River Township on Sunday when both were ejected from the ORV.

The child died as a result of the crash and Lewis received a severe leg injury.

Police say both were wearing helmets and speed and alcohol were not a factor in the crash.

To the mother, father and all of the little boys family. I am sorry that you have to listen to people who have never had anything bad happen to them! I hope that you can move on one day, even though I know its hard! I could never imagine losing one of my own children, it was sad enough when my aunt who was 36 killed herself! Just remember that bad things happen and everyone has that one horrible event happen some have it happen more! Again I am so sorry for your loss and IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT!! Accidents happen!

Angie the apologist!

Instead of making excuses for those responsible for the death of a child, Angie needs to wake up to who's truely responsible for this tragedy! It's time to "point fingers" at those whose poor judgement led to the unnecessary death of a child. Why is intervention always left until after the fact and until the damage is done? Adults are entrusted in the welfare of children and when the adults are foolish or careless in their decisions children often suffer! A five year old had no place on an ATV!

So very sorry you have to listen to this.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Please do not listen to the high noses that point fingers on this website. You are not alone. There are many parents who take their children 4 wheeling and who read this story and had their heart sink. It was an accident, plain and simple, and there is no way to reverse it now. I hope you will heal from your loss with time. No words will seem to make any difference now, and you will have to find your own way to cope. But you will make it.

I pray that those who cast the stones on this site will never have to live through the misery of having to bury a child and further have to listen to people stab the knife deeper by questioning your love as a parent. You did nothing wrong. To go around afraid of the world would be no way to raise a child. I will continue to take my son out 4 wheeling and teach him about the wilderness, because my son will respect the lessons of life without the fear of that which we can't control. God bless your family.

We live in a Sad, Sad World!

Its cold hearted people like you that give our country a bad name! What happen to compastion and understanding and helping others? Now a days everyone is quick to throw a blame and point their fingers! You people should grow up or shut up!

Again to the family and this mother! Its not your fault and accidents happen! I hope you heal fast and try to heal from your loss! I am so sorry for the way people our and you should not listen to them at all!

Take Care:)

Apologists for stupidity !

A five year old should have never been on that ATV! The adult is responsible for the child's death due to poor judgement! The tragedy is that a child's welfare entrusted to an adult was forfeit due to defective thinking. Anyone who apologizes for the adult in this tragedy is also showing lousy priorities!

Death and loose a leg?

Posted by Truth Streched?, Lanse - Wednesday, October 07, 2009 at 6:06 p.m.

First of all Sorry to the family and friends for their loss. The thing that I'm trying to find out is if she was going slow (speed was not a factor) and was sober (alcohol was not a factor) and had helmets on, how can such a severe injury and death happen? Even if the steering broke going SLOW or it hit a bump and rolled over going SLOW this could not have happened. Did another vehicle hit her? Roll down a ravine? I'm not blaming ANYONE!! Just alot unanswered. Best of luck in your recovery!

Who are you to judge!!

Shame on you people who are quick to throw blame! This mother was taking her son on a ride with their helmets on and now she is missing a leg and her son is dead! You should shut your mouth and say nothing but how sorry you are for this mothers loss and a huge change in life! Have you lost a child? Do you have any at all? Shame on you!!

To the parents of this child I am sorry for your loss and it is not your fault! Things happen and its just that simple! I hope you recover soon and that your heart heals one day:) Take Care!

NO CHILD UNDER 16 ON ANY ATV!

Posted by Sue Rabe, Oregon - Tuesday, October 06, 2009 at 10:19 p.m.

You put your child at an uneccessary risk by allowing them to be on an ATV before they are old enough to drive a car. Cars are safer because they have protection around them yet people still are injured and die from accidents. If you have a similar accident in an ATV your chances of survial are small, especially when it comes to children. No amount of training or supervision is going to help. I believe one most be of legal driving age and obtain a valid drivers licence before being allow to operate or ride on an ATV! The numbers of deaths and injuries are skyrocketing and it's time it stops!

Child killed in ATV accident

Why are ATV's allowed on paved roads! They aren't meant for road driving and when you add a child to the mix it turns even more deadly. I not only blame the adults bad choice, but the most blame should go to the law makers who are allowing people to drive ATV's on the streets! I hope they realize they are responsible for this child's death and any others that happen from these kind of ATV accidents.

Accidents are terrible

Posted by A Mom Who Allows Her CHild to Drive an ATV C, UP - Monday, October 05, 2009 at 6:34 p.m.

Accidents are terrible in no matter what kind of vehicle they were in. Accidents can happen in an ORV, ATV, snowmobile, or car. We put our kids in cars every day in the hope that we will arrive at our destination safely....but accidents happen. It's a fact. The child was wearing a helmet, and speed was not a factor, so obviously she was taking precautions. Don't blame the equipment. It's sad no matter what way you look at it.
