MUNISING -- The poor economy has led to 16 people being laid off this week in Alger County.
According to a spokesperson at Timber Products in Munising, 16 people were laid off Tuesday. He said this has nothing to do with the ongoing labor situation at the plant. He cited slowing sales and a decline in prices.
Meanwhile, the contract issue is still not resolved. It expired in April.
A federal mediator will be working with the company and the IAM Union, with a meeting tentatively scheduled for October 12.
At issue are wages and the pension.
At one time, Timber Products had employed more than 200 people. It's now down to 143.
