IRON RIVER -- From a young age, Jay Barry knew he was meant to be on the radio.

"Since high school days, (I) had to be a broadcaster,” said Jay.  "Turned out to be a broadcaster and I loved it, everyday."

Jay has spent nearly all of his 45 years in broadcasting at WIKB in Iron River.  For most of those years, he's hosted telephone time, a three-hour talk show, pitching products and services to listeners.  But it's much more; it's fun and a way to inform people about community happenings.  WIKB says Jay has hosted the nation’s longest running talk show since 1965.

Jay has seen several changes in the broadcast industry in his 45 year career.  From records and tracks to computers and automation, he's been a part of the changing radio landscape.

"Now everything is basically computers and it gets more and more everyday,” Jay said.  “The broadcast industry is totally relying on computers today, and they're moving away from that one-on-one contact, and that's not a good thing."

That one-on-one contact with listeners is Jay's expertise.  And now Jay has decided he's retiring--Wednesday will be his last day.  And while he'll miss his on-air duties, it's his other job as the general manager of the station that makes him ready to retire.

"I'm going to miss people,” Jay said.  “That's going to be the hardest part, saying goodbye on Wednesday."

And in return, his listeners who have become his friends over the years, will miss him, too.

Jay is the real deal

I was able to tell Jay THANKS live on-the-air this morning... but I wanted to do it here too. Like Pete and Sarah (EMAIL ME GUYS!), Jay gave me my first radio job while in High School. He gave me a lot of pointers like "don't say 'AND' everytime you open the mic!": "...AND that was the Beatles" "AND it's 5:00 and time for news"...

He also had a big heart and didn't fire me when I would "re-wire" the studio. One time he came in while I was working and I had 8 ceiling tiles pulled out and wires running everywhere. All he said was "make sure it's working and looks good in the morning, Kel" and walked out :)

Thanks again for everything Jay!

Thanks!

Jay,
Just wanted to say good luck in retirement and THANK YOU for giving me my start in a media career that's been one big, amazing adventure...I loved every moment of working at WiKB! I will never forget what a great boss/mentor you were to me: thanks for giving a chance to a shy 16-year-old wannabe radio host nearly 15 (!) years ago! :) The Ironland area will definitely miss your voice on the airwaves, but enjoy your downtime!
The best to you and yours, and thanks again!
as always, Sarah Adams

The King of Radio retires

Jay, we will truly miss you at WIKB. You were one of the last links to live, one-on-one radio and that is disappearing fast, especially at WIKB. We wish Kurt Paro the best as your heir apparent on Telephone Time and I hope that management values his skill and continues with the show. At least you can listen to live radio at your old station, Jay. for a few hours a day. I hope they keep the Wykons, Trojans, and Bobcats on the radio as a link to the past, also. Congrats, Jay!

good luck jay!

Thanks for giving our "Ironland Area" years of entertainment and tips on where to find a great deal on a boat or car or the many other things I hooked up with over the years thanks to your show.

But thanks in particular for giving me my first big shot in media. I got my first FCC license broadcasting for you Jay and you were a great boss. Maybe I'll see you sometime, "Down By The Riverside", eh? God bless you and your family.
