MIDDLEVILLE, MI (AP) -- A southwest Michigan woman has been told that she's breaking the law because she watches her neighbors' children each morning before they get on the school bus.

Lisa Snyder of Middleville says it's "ridiculous" that she faces fines and possible jail for being a good neighbor and watching two children for less than hour without getting paid.

State Department of Human Services officials told her last week that she was operating an illegal day care.

Snyder appeared Tuesday on NBC's "Today" show.

The stay-at-home mom said DHS officials ordered her to stop watching the kids, obtain a state license, or face possible penalties.

Snyder said she doesn't know who filed the complaint against her, but it must be "someone close by who can see what's going on."
