BARAGA -- Although production had dropped significantly at Terex in Baraga over the past year, the businesses around the plant were still shocked to learn that Terex is closing its doors.  And now the businesses are left wondering how they'll stay afloat in a tough economy.

Terex Telehandler say they'll be closing the Baraga plant between November 30 and December 11, and this at a time when jobs in Baraga County are hard to find.

"We're at 26 percent unemployment right now," said Baraga County Commissioner, Bill Menge.  "And this is definitely going to chase that up, which we don't want."

The 90 people who currently work at the plant will lose their jobs.  According to a company spokesperson, no one has been offered a transfer to Moses Lake, Washington, where they're relocating the plant.

Just feet away sit other businesses that provide nearly all the parts and paint for the Terex Telehandler, like Peninsula Powder Coating, which paints all the parts for the Telehandler.

"The market has dropped extensively over the past year," said owner, Brian Baccus.  "So, our business was already off a good chunk from last year.  But this is going to be a big blow to our business.  Roughly 30 to 40 percent of our business will disappear when they close their doors."

Staff at Hi Park Industries, who provide Terex with all the tires for the telehandlers, wonder who they'll sell to in the future.

This is after Terex went from producing 12 Telehandlers a day to one a day, leaving them with excess tires.

Seen it coming

Terex was a good company to work for. What is making me mad though is everyone is acting like it's the end of the world for the 90 employees left there. What about the rest of us (over 100 of us) who lost their jobs from there on the last few cuts they made?? Yes the economy is a big part to blame but also poor management and poor decisions on the companies part are the biggest factors. They started cutting corners, didn't care about quality and lost many many sales and customers because of it. Life will go on. Terex isn't the company keeping Baraga County afloat. A lot worse can yet happen.

Ex Pettibone

It is too bad another business is leaving the area. Terex (Genie) did a lot of good things for the mfg's in the area. I am not surprised Terex pulled stakes and left Baraga though. The mindset of mfg's and suppliers in that area is outdated for the most part. Shipping, materials, etc are a nightmare in that area. There is no easy way to get things in and out of Baraga/L'Anse. But I am surprised that Pettibone is able to hobble along and keep the doors open. Best of luck to those left at Pettibone, I jumped that ship before it started to take on water.

Relocating.. Not Closing!

Thank you State of Michigan!!!! Note they are relocating to Washington... Not just closing the doors. At one point Terex wanted to expand in Baraga! The State of Michigan could have stopped this from happening. Time for some new faces in Lansing!

The funny thing about this is that "3 weeks" ago a certain purchasing agent of Terex came around and asked for discounts on parts. Kinda funny that he didn't mention that they were pulling out of town.He got his discount, we got hurt. Next, will we get paid?
