BARAGA -- There is some unwelcomed news coming out of Baraga County.  We have learned that the Terex-Handler Company is halting their operations in Baraga within 60 days.

They state economic uncertainty as the reason.

As part of the company's consolidation, they will be producing the product line at their established Moses Lake, WA plant.

Terex-Handler management held a meeting with local Terex employees to tell them about the decision.  They then let the employees go home for the day (Wednesday).

According to a press release, all team members will receive exit benefits and outplacement assistance.

The closure of the plant has a trickle-down effect on other companies in the area.

The plant could shut down as early as November 30.

It's called: Talk to your officials, see if there was any plans to attempt to save the jobs of hard working individuals in Michigan. If you looked at the facts there were more than one plant that was looked into being shutdown.. They chose Michigan of course.. Why is this? Perhaps not enough tax incentives? Perhaps too much hoops to jump through? Was it lack of people doing their jobs?? Theft?.. We of course wont know unless we demand answers.

I'm glad you read well when I said respond with a name, don't hide behind your shadows.. Understandable if your hiding from your job. However, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

What does that mean to you?

What do elected officials have to do with this plant closing? I can't give them "living hell", as you put it, if it has nothing to do with them. Our elected officials can't perform magic when our economy is in the toilet or businesses are just poorly run.

Poor Executive/Accounting Decisions May Be to Blame - Not the Economy

Posted by Concerned Citizen, L'Anse - Monday, September 28, 2009 at 3:26 p.m.

Genie Industries was a failing company when Terex purchased it and it will continue to be so until major executive/accounting position changes are made. When Genie Industries in Redmond, WA began building and engineering changes to the Telehandler machine they made so many erroneous engineering and manufacturing mistakes that the Baraga employees had to go all over the country to fix these defects. I believe it cost the company upwards of $8 million dollars to make these fixes. The sad part is that all these defects have not been corrected and will end up costing the company another $12 million to corret.
Not only that, Terex Corp. just settled with the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) on 8/12/09 in the amount of $8 million for accounting fraud for making material misstatements in its own financial reports to investors, as well as aiding and abetting a fraudulent accounting scheme at United Rentals, Inc. The SEC charges also allege that from 2000 - 2004, Terex's accounting staff failed to properly investigate and correct imbalances from certain intercompany transactions. Instead Terex offset the imbalances with unsupported and improper entries, resulting in costs that were not recorded as expenses, and therefore Terex appeared to be more profitable than it was. Terex, of course, is neither denying nor admitting the SEC's charges by agreeing to this settlement. This information can be viewed at www.sec.gov.

TEREX/GENIE

Posted by down and out, lanse - Friday, September 25, 2009 at 8:26 p.m.

90 positions being eliminated is bull ----. What about the aproximately 200 people who lost their jobs in the last year. Genie's poor management skills have
harmed alot more than the 90 people this story is telling you.

Down and out at Terex/Genie

Posted by the of the down and out lost my job, Baraga/L'anse - Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 2:19 p.m.

It isn't bad enough that Baraga county has 26% unemployment but for Terex/Genie which both are from very rich locations. (Genie Redmond Washington home of Bill Gates Microsoft)and Terex from Westport connecticut Genie which has been part of Terex for 4 years and Terex Handlers for 12 years to close the small middle class towns shop down is very sad.
I know 90 people more layed off doesn't sound like that bad but those 90 jobs turn into 300 to 400 more lost jobs. now we can have 30% unemployment and once again the rich get richer and the poor get stepped on..........

TEREX HANDLERS

Posted by LANSE RESIDENT, BARAGA COUNNTY - Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 11:52 a.m.

TEREX MADE THEIR FIRST MISTAKE IN ABOUT 2004 WHEN THEY
BOUGHT OUT A FAILING COMPANY 'GENIE INDUSTRIES', AND
LET THEM RUN THE COMPANY AFTER THE BUY OUT. ALL GENIE
DID WAS RUN THE COMPANY BACK INTO THE GROUND. IF THE
EXEC'S AT TEREX HAD HALF A BRAIN THEY WOULD START MAKING MINING EQUIPMENT IN BARAGA WITH THE 5 OR 6 MINES THAT WANTTO STRAT OPERATION HERE IN THE U.P.
THEIR EXIT BENEFIT PACKAGE IS MUCH, AND THE OUTPLACEMENT ASSISTANCE IS TEACHING YOU HOW TO FILL OUT A JOB APPLICATION. THE COMPANY JUST SPENT BIG BUCKS BRINGING THE WHOLE TELEHANDLER LINE FROM REDMOND
WA TO BARAGA A YEAR AND A HALF AGO AND NOW THEY ARE SENDING IT TO MOSES LAKE THREE HOURS AWAY FROM REDMOND
DON'T MAKE ANY SENSE. GOOD LUCK TO THE 90 PEOPLE AS
THEY JOIN THE REST OF THEIR FORMER TEAMMATES WHO WERE
LET GO IN THE LAST YEAR ON THE STREETS. BECAUSE THERE
IS ON OTHER WORK AROUND HERE. BARAGA COUNTY IS REALLY
GOING TO SUFFER OVER THIS. IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE ITS
GETTING BETTER ANY TIME SOON.

Stimulus?

Posted by No Stimulus, L'Anse - Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 11:14 a.m.

Very sad news for Baraga County. Obviously, the stimulus package is not working. Oh, but I read in the paper that the gov't may be giving the tribe a grant for another gas station? Just what we need!Awful that there is grant money available for yet another tribal business.

Poor Managment ?

Posted by T S, Baraga - Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 8:46 a.m.

I can see why Terex plant is closing, if they run all their plants like the Baraga plant we didn't have a chance !!!

God have mercy

Posted by Concerned Citizen, L'Anse - Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 10:05 p.m.

Dear God, help these employees from Terex and their families. Help those people who perform contract work for Terex. Look down on this community have mercy. Help these people find a way to provide for themselves and their families, and let the rest of this community find the best way we can help them in their struggle. Allow us to be of service to them so we all together can be of service to you. Amen

Goodbye Baraga!

Posted by Donald McRonald, L'Anse - Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 8:15 p.m.

This is DEVASTATING to Baraga and the surrounding areas. I predict that in 6 months time, Baraga will be nothing more than a reservation with a gas station.

Sad/Sorry to hear

Posted by Mike K, Baraga - Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 5:21 p.m.

Hell of a way to find out about this/get confirmation(VIA THE INTERNET PRESS RELEASE)
To all the good employees/suppliers in Baraga who have spent their last 20+ years working to build the Terex/BPI Machine into the success it has been, I wish you the best of luck. I hope the Terex Corp. will help make the transition from employed to unemployed as easy as possible, for both employees and all the suppliers.
