DOLLAR BAY -- Somero's Farm in Dollar Bay is known to Copper Country residents as the place to come for pumpkins and fall fun.
This year the farm festivities feature a massive corn maze made with help from the community and two students from Michigan Tech.
Roger Somero owns the farm and makes a living selling pumpkins, but he has his fun creating an all-around good time for his customers each fall.
The setup includes a teepee, a big pumpkin balloon, food vendors and old-fashioned cars. But Somero is most excited about the farm's newest attraction: a four-acre corn maze.
"It’s mind boggling to me how it just came about,” said Somero. “A lot of people volunteered. A couple of guys helped to build that bridge. It was just one thing after another."
Brad Wargnier is a fifth year student of environmental engineering at Michigan Tech. He and a friend spent more than 200 hours this summer designing the maze, which reflects Somero’s love of fishing.
"It’s better than the sketch and the sketch was awesome. They did a really cool job," Somero said.
Featuring two-and-a-quarter miles of trails, the maze has hidden checkpoints with different shaped hole punches that people can use to mark their journey. It also features a mini-maze for younger kids.
"The public is going to love this maze; it's built for kids of all ages,” said Wargnier. “My buddy Jordan and I have a blast out here and we're not even going through it."
Of course the maze is just part of the fun at Somero’s farm this fall. As usual there will be plenty of pumpkins to pick from and special activities for kids lasting through Halloween.
