COPPER HARBOR -- The 28th Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Michigan Special Olympics kicked off in Copper Harbor Monday afternoon.
Runners representing the Fraternal Order of Police, the Michigan State Police and the Michigan Department of Corrections will carry the torch 750 miles over the next five days.
The route is run by one or more team members for five miles at a time. The first leg began at noon Monday at Fort Wilkins State Park.
'It gives these athletes a different chance at life. It keeps them in the positive instead of the negative. I'm in the Department of Corrections and I see what happens to people who are manipulated to go the wrong way," said runner James Dennis of the Michigan Department of Correections.
The runners have been raising money throughout the year for this event. Last year's run raised $350,000.
