ESCANABA -- Due to the decline in market demand, the NewPage Paper Mill in Escanaba will be experiencing some downtime over the next couple of weeks.  Paper production will stop over the next ten days.

Officials say they're requiring workers to use vacation time during those days to avoid layoffs.

This temporary shutdown ties into the 150,000 ton paper reduction already announced by NewPage for its second quarter.

"One of the things we've learned over the past year is predicting the market is really challenging," says Kelvin Smyth with NewPage.  "We're hopeful and some officials are saying that by July, they expect the market to turn around, but there's really no way to be sure at this point."

Work at the paper mill is expected to return back to normal Monday, April 20.

Temporary Down

They will start back up...this is one of New Pages flagship mills. Market downs are nothing unusual in the cyclic paper industry. Combining it with an utility outage makes good sense. Forcing vacations isn't right but New
Page isn't known for what they do for employees.

Unfair?

If it is so unfair these people can quit. There would be 10 people standing in line to take one of those jobs. Arent many places you can go and make that kinda dough. Stop whining and go on vacation for a couple weeks if you work there.... X

They will start back up

They are doing alot of maintenance during this shut down, some that required a total mill down. Extensive overdue maintenance on #11 boiler, maintenance on #10 boiler, and throughout other areas of the mill. If they weren't going to start back up, I'm sure they wouldn't be spending millions and millions of dollars on repairs.
