Marquette duo still attracts the college crowd after playing around the U.P. for three decades.

MARQUETTE -- Though generations apart, local band, Jim and Ray, are still able to get college coeds singing out loud.

"Music is universal!” laughed Jim Pennell, lead singer and guitarist for the group.  “It touches everybody regardless of age or where they're from or what their interests are.  Everybody likes music."

Pennell has been playing classic rock tunes around Marquette with his friend, Ray Dollar, for over 30 years, but Pennell's passion for music began much earlier.

"When I was a kid, there was always music in the house, and everybody in my family played music.  So it's just natural that I started playing music too,” Pennell said.

And naturally, both Pennell and Dollar hope their enthusiasm catches on out in the crowd.

"We play anywhere for anything for any age group!” exclaimed Dollar, also a guitarist and singer.  “I just like for people to come out and have their own good time, and hopefully we can enhance that good time."

Those looking for a good time can hear Jim and Ray play every Thursday night at Vango's in downtown Marquette.
