LANSING -- The first wave of what could be tens of thousands of people signing up for Michigan's Medical Marijuana Program is expected in Lansing this week.

Rules for Michigan's medical-marijuana program went into effect Saturday, and the state began taking applications Monday.  The first cards will be issued to patients later in April.

But questions linger about how the program will work in practice.

Michigan residents can get a doctor's recommendation to use marijuana to relieve pain and other symptoms.

Patients can register with the state and receive a card protecting them from arrest.

Twelve other states have similar programs.

medical marijuana

Posted by Karen Leiter, Grand Rapids, MI. - Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 12:25 p.m.

What we need to do is "Say Yes to weed". Our country has spent so much money, trying to fight it. They're no closer then they were years ago. Instead, they put the offenders in prisons and we all take care of them. More money, spent un-usefully. Sell like cigarettes and tax the heck out of smokers. Like you do now. And maybe, our country might be in the green, again some day.

Losing Loads Of Cash

This new marihuana measure is based on the tax dollars of people who are against the measure. It encourages growth of up to 12 plants per registered patient. That could equal about 12 ounces worth up to $600 wholesale or $2400 retail. This leaves about $1800 profit in the sellers untaxed hands and 12 ounces at large dispersed street level worth up to $16800 collectively all untaxed and all unbeneficial to the general public.

This measure, asks new patients to pay only a $100 registration fee... gee how intuitive. Once paid, you need the approval of a doctor to use it. What do doctors know about weed?

Isn’t more fiscally and communally sound to require patients to pay a monthly membership fee equal to the quantity prescribed so as to produce a positive profit for our state rather than an increase in marijuana related arrests because the supplies gone up.

This is like deregulating the alcohol and tobacco industries to allow people to produce their own, for their own purposes; we all know that’s not gunna happen… but maybe it should.

Regulate the &$!# out of pot and tax it like a fricken box of cigarettes. You can still arrest the illegal cultivators and smokers, but registered growers could have monitored quotas or patient volume restrictions, smokers can have their little cards that are membership based and have piece of mind for not having to grow their own medicine, ie convenience. Wal-marts or local chains could develop to handle distribution…

So instead of paying taxes to support this new Michigan Marijuana Administration to sit in their office chairs while chaos unfolds everywhere because of their ineptitudes, stay on your current meds, talk to your doctors about alternatives to the medicine you take now, and most importantly, knock these bureaucrats down a peg, email them your disgust at BHP-MMMPINFO@michigan.gov

Cannabis has been used for about 4,000 years for medical purposes. In Taiwan about 10,000 years ago the people of that country used marijuana for fiber. It’s important to mention that it’s not the social threat authorities believe it to be. On http://medicalpot.com . you can find out more about the wide range of medical applications of pot in treating diseases such as convulsions, asthma, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, schizophrenia.

Appalled Citized, MI has obviously never had to go thru cancer treatments that leave you too sick to take oral medication. Insurance only allows you to stay in the hospital on I.V. meds for a short time. The nausea & often pain that comes with cancer & it’s treatment can be horrendous. As to your suggestion that other pain drugs do just fine, have you investigated some of the long-term effects of many of the pain killers? For those who can swallow a pill, there is Marinol, a synthetic cannabis, which produces similar effects to natural marijuana.

So, until you’ve walked in the shoes of a cancer/chemo patient, too sick to live by your morals and values, perhaps you should reconsider your judgments of others.

Also there is a synthetic (pill form) called Marinol which produces the same effect. Do you want to condemn that too? It does act like marijuana. There are folks legally getting high on that right now.

In this case, it's better settled between Dr. and Patient.

I researched the article, and researched the Medical Marijuana and even checked out the forms. There are alot of "hoops" one has to jump through. I checked out the forms, and I have three of them, I will be discussing my options with my doctor about the usage of it and if it is right for me. I am not now on it, but if it can rid me of half of the medications I am taking now, then I'm all for it. It's not fun when your muscles spasm so bad you can't walk, or sleep for that matter. It's no fun at all when your spending more of your days being ill than being well, by no choice of your own. But each person needs to talk it over with their doctors and make an informed decision. Will I be upset if my doctor says I don't need it? No. I just go about my days as I have. Those who know me understand exactly what I am saying. Let each person talk over all their options with their health care providers, instead of screaming, "Potheads"and "Dope Addicts" just because someone uses Marijuana for medicinal purposes and nothing more. Cancer patients should be automatic on medical marijuana as it has been proven to help the stomach and side effects after chemotherapy. I'm glad my vote counted to make it legal.

People make me sick... pot is my crutch.

Posted by Topic Starter, UPisUS.info - Tuesday, April 07, 2009 at 10:29 p.m.

I can't believe how dehumanizing people are to people who smoke pot. You think they're less of people than you? Do YOU smoke cigs or drink occasionally? What makes a pot head so bad that you have to slander them and segregate them? True they are mainly selfish people but many of them go under appreciated for smoking THIS plant while others get smoke breaks...

Trying to stop it is like trying not to breath, you either can't do it or you die trying... so breath deep and inhale.

"why grow weed to treat your ailment when there are already drugs to do it?" I think thats what the lobbyists are screaming for their clients- ceo's of big drug companies. "why give the people the power to grow their own medicene, when they can give us their money and we'll feed 'em drugs that we make."
its a big business to keep you sick and needing drugs from these companies. they don't want you to be able to help yourself. big drug companies shell out millions to high powered lobbyists to help thrwart any kind of legislation that enables us to provide our own NATURAL medicene.

big drug companies
big insurance
big mouths
big trouble..........

1/2 way their

Posted by Bud Caryl, G.M. - Tuesday, April 07, 2009 at 9:20 a.m.

we are 1/2 way their, its about time that they made it available for medical use.You look at all the pain killers that flood the streets already and one has to ask why? Their is more crime involeving oxycotten vicodine and other so called pain killers.Marijuana is less harmfull then tobbaco or booze but yet the government makes money off it everyday.

Taxing the green

Posted by citizen x, delta county - Tuesday, April 07, 2009 at 9:16 a.m.

Someone asked how they would tax a grow your own operation. I assume most all users would grow their own. The government already has a tax on marijuana. They have what are called "tax stamps". Not all states use them, but more than half do. Basically you need to purchase the stamp to be in posession of a certain amount. If you dont have your tax stamp purchased, and are caught with weed, you are subject to a fine. I am sure something along those lines would be used in michigan.

Application fee?

Posted by Scott Foreman, Marq - Tuesday, April 07, 2009 at 7:49 a.m.

I wonder if there is a non refundable application fee? And if so, how much? That would be par for Michigan. Tens of thousands times, say 20 bucks. And less than 1 percent will get a card. Money maker.

Your title sums up your questions! If you took the time to read up and stay informed, you would know that a person with a state issued permit can posses 2.5 ounces at any time. So I suggest you read before you comment:)

Simple. Most people wouldn't want to take the time to grow their own. It takes a few months to grow a successful marijuana plant. I'd imagine most people would rather take a walk down to their local convenience store.

In other words, it's more convenient.

What Kirk said...

Posted by UP Yooper, MQT - Monday, April 06, 2009 at 8:04 p.m.

That's my thought, too, Kirk. How do they tax what people will just grow at home? If Michigan legalized marijuana, do you really expect to be able to purchase a joint at your local Wal-Mart? I highly doubt it. Do you really expect the people who currently deal marijuana to report on their taxes that they sold "X" amount worth so the state can tax it (in other words, the honor system)? I think you've been smoking too much if you do!

The pot heads can only possess and grow so much at one time for whatever ailment they have. I'm all for the people that need it as far as cancer patients, medical uses, etc but the everyday user who says he has chronic pain and marijuana alleviates is the people who are going to be the abusers. It will only be a short time and the cops will be fed up with the whole ordeal and won't be enforcing small time pot heads. It will be a waste of their time and efforts and far too confusing.. So smoke your marijuana you pot heads and lose the rest of your brain cells..

Unnecessary Evil

Posted by Appalled Citized, MI - Monday, April 06, 2009 at 7:02 p.m.

I can't believe what a cop out this is, using marijuana for "medical purposes". There is absolutely no reason for it. People say it is to alleviate chronic pain, yet there are countless medications available already that relieve pain and work just fine. Where has the United States' morals and values gone?

Kirk

how do you tax something you can grow yourself?

to R P

Posted by mike m, hancock - Monday, April 06, 2009 at 5:51 p.m.

If you'd read the application, you'd see that it's not quite that easy to attain one of these cards. They aren't just going to give away free weed to whomever wants it.

Smoking pot just happens to alleviate many of the symptoms that people with debilitating illnesses must deal with daily. If it helps, why not let 'em have it? They deserve it.

Also part of the form, it states that it is not a prescription. It's basically a license to possess and smoke marijuana.

its About time

Posted by kirk chartier, kingsford - Monday, April 06, 2009 at 5:33 p.m.

Do u know that if they legalized marijuana in this state completely it would get rid of the debt crisis in michigan. California wants to legalize and said they would make one billion dollars the first year just because the government would be able to tax it. Its not anyworse then drinking then again its safer!!!

Stupid Stupid Stupid idea

This has got to be one of the top 10 dumbest ideas. anyone who actually gets a card cannot be arrested? please tell me that there is some kind of limit on the amount they can have on them? how about the prescription can any doctor prescribe it or can only certain ones?
