Lake Michigan and Superior are up from last year.
UPPER PENINSULA -- It looks like we've ended our record breaking 27 days of consecutive measureable snowfall in the Marquette Area. Still, the snow that has fallen is helping lake levels, which were down dramatically last year.
Superior is up four inches compared to this time last year and Lake Michigan is up 14 inches.
System snows have helped add to water levels this season, but both lakes are down from their averages. Lake Superior is down six inches, while Lake Michigan is a foot below its average.
Meteorologists say that is because of lake effect snow.
"The lake levels have been lower this year and over the past few years because we haven't had as much system snow," says Andrew Kennedy of the National Weather Service. "We've had more lake effect snow and that's actually drawing from the lake."
Superior is expected to drop another two inches this month, while Michigan could lose an inch.
