HOUGHTON -- Using the ironing technique they learned from Michigan Tech students during Winter Carnival, the two artists freezing a Chevy Nova were putting the finishing touches on their creation Thursday.
The project didn't turn out quite how art professors Mary Carothers and Sue Wrbican intended when they started out a month and a half ago. Originally they planned to freeze the Nova in a block of ice, but warm days made it difficult to freeze enough water. So they used harvested lake ice to freeze around the car, once they had a two foot base. The say the evolved masterpiece still represents a need for culture to think about energy use.
"We think it's a nice connection to local culture and history, to the mining of the area,” said Professor Mary Carothers from the University of Tennessee.
"The high point for me was when Scott MacInnes came out with the mayor and ex-mayor to load ice on top of the car in the middle of the night," added Professor Sue Wrbican from George Mason University.
The women haven't decided what they'll do with the car now. They'll both head back to their respective universities next week.
