IRON MOUNTAIN -- Police have taken a suspect into custody after a six-hour long stand-off in Iron Mountain.

It started shortly after 8 am CT Friday morning when, two Iron Mountain police officers tried to make contact with the suspect.  The suspect, officials say, attacked one of them with a sword.

One of the officers suffered cuts to his hand and was taken to Dickinson County Hospital and released.  The Michigan State Emergency Support Team was activated and arrived in Iron Mountain early in the afternoon.

Negotiations with the suspect who had barricaded himself inside the house on the 600 block of West C Street continued for several hours.

Finally, at about  2 pm CT, officers broke into the house and took the suspect into custody.  Bare-chested, he was escorted to an ambulance by officers who were holding each of his arms.  He was then transported to Dickinson County Hospital.

No shots were fired in the stand-off, according to officials.

Three schools in the immediate area were forced to lock down their buildings as a precaution.  Dickinson Catholic School, Iron Mountain High School and Central School were those affected.  Students began using the comment section on the TV6 website to communicate to their family on the outside as well as students at other schools.  Those comments can be read below.

School officials worked with law enforcement during the stand-off and school lockdown.  Pizzas and sodas were brought in for the students.

The three schools were released from lockdown shortly after the situation ended.

The suspect's name has not been released.
