DICKINSON COUNTY -- Congressman Bart Stupak could be getting some competition in November.
Monday Dan Benishek announced he'll run for congress in Michigan's first district.
Benishek, an Iron River native, is running as a republican.
He made his announcement Monday on the steps of the Dickinson County courthouse.
Benishek has never run for public office but felt compelled to, based on what he sees happening in Washington.
He spoke about the importance of creating jobs and being fiscally responsible both at home and across the country.
"The issue is jobs, the unemployment in our district is over 10 percent. It's unbelievable that the people in Washington are distracting us with all these other issues, number one the healthcare issue which is an important issue but not nearly as important as having a job," Dan Benishek, House of Representative Candidate.
Benishek works as a general surgeon in Dickinson County.
He's the second person to announce his plans to run for Stupak's seat.
Democrat Connie Saltonstall also announced her candidacy last week.
