MARQUETTE -- The Marquette County Law Enforcement Administrator's Association has named the police officer of the year:  Detective Lieutenant Stephen Kangas of the Marquette County Sheriff's Department.

A graduate of Westwood High School and NMU, Kangas has been with the Sheriff's Department since 1998.

He was chosen for his work on several breaking and entering cases last year, as well detecting the Black River Falls fire and assisting residents in evacuating.

The awards presentation for Kangas will be Wednesday morning at Northern Michigan University.
