MARQUETTE COUNTY -- After working for Uncle Sam, veterans face another tough job--finding employment.

In 2004, the "Hire Vets First" campaign was created.  Its goal is to help vets find work after the military, as well as aid employers looking to fill open positions.

Cliffs Natural Resources employs more than a 130 veterans.

"There is a high-level of training on teamwork, cooperation, leadership, motivation," said cliffs administrator of employee relations, Troy Sarles, "and those are the qualities that we look for in an employees of Cliffs."

Michigan Works! spent Friday morning at the Tilden Mine, and in front of a group of veterans, they awarded Cliffs a certificate for their dedication to hire vets first.

"In Michigan, specifically, the Michigan Works! Service Centers are concentrating on our employers that give vets the first opportunity.

General Brown served over in the Philippines as member of the U.S. Marine Corp and knows firsthand the difficulties of finding employment after getting out of the military.

"Sometimes it can be a struggle coming back from such a structured environment and things," said General Brown, "so to be able to get into a company or find employment is very good."

Three of Cliffs employees are currently on deployment, but with the economy still struggling, it's comforting for vets to know that the transition from military to civilian life is a little easier, thanks to employers who do their part to hire vets first.

Hi W.W. from Negaunee...

Actually, I was talking about someone else. I brought up the case of the former National Guard company commander who went on an overseas deployment for a humanitarian mission in the Balkans several years ago. This young former soldier was Cliffs salaried, working to support his young wife and small child. Cliffs threw him out of the company this summer, justifying his termination as due to economic hardship. This was during the same week that Cliffs paid out monthly and quarterly production bonuses to all other salaried staff. The Cliffs official cited in this news item participated in the termination of this veteran. I will be really surprised if this post makes it past the TV6 censors.

uh.. D.H.

The guy wasn't Leaving the job. Contractually he can take Military leave but Upper management treated him like he was not taking his job back (I bet this is the same guy "peacetime Vet" is talking about)

...you are soooo right about an alleged Cliffs/TV6 love affair. I tried to post a brief account of how poorly Cliffs senior-level management treated a hardworking young veteran this past summer, and it didn't make it past the TV6 censors. Nothing defamatory, obscene, abusive, or threatening in the post, just the plain truth (which doesn't seem to interest today's journalists).

BS About Cliffs

Hmmm. What about the Guy who cliffs Hired last fall, who after being laid off reenlisted to pay the bills only to have to fight to get military leave. Yup... Cliffs called him back, he was in afghanistan so obviously couldn't come back for Monday, and they treated him like he refused the callback, and basically his job. He had quite the fight to get his rightful status and now they are bragging about it? Nice

Maybe instead of just focusing on vets, Cliffs should consider hiring a few psychiatrists, manners coaches, fitness trainers, and personal hygiene specialists. Maybe then they could teach Cliffs management and engineers to look and behave like decent human beings, so that people would actually like working there.

WOW

Being a veteran doesn't mean a thing if you're looking for a job at Cliffs. I had tried everything I could think of in the hopes of getting employed there. For over 10 years I had an application on-line. Neighbors working at Cliffs, hand carried resumes to Cliffs human resources for me. I never got as much as a phone call.

In the Air Force, I had a top secret security clearance and hold a current CPL, so there is no problem with me ever passing a background check. For over 13 years I was part of a crew of 6 that operated a multi-million dollar, 244 ton, B-52 bomber that was charged with delivering nuclear weapons if called upon to do so. But I'm not good enough to drive a production truck or even a service van for Cliffs. I don't drink, smoke or do drugs, so there is no chance of me every failing a drug or alcohol test. I don't hunt either, so there is no chance of me coming down with the flu on November 15. I'm a certified occupational hearing conservationist and am a MSHA certified instructor, but I'm not good enough for Cliffs.

Qualifications, being a veteran and of high personal, moral character doesn't mean jack squat if you want a job at Cliffs. You just have to be the son, daughter, niece, nephew, grandchild or other relative of a Cliff's employee. That is the only thing that ever did, or ever will matter.
