SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY -- Schoolcraft County's new fiscal year budget is now in effect and it includes cuts to the sheriff's department.

Sheriff Grant Harris threatened a lawsuit, hoping to delay the reductions.  But a county commissioner told us a circuit court judge has denied a temporary injunction to hold off the cuts.

The county board is changing the undersheriff's position from full-time to part-time.

They're also cutting secondary road patrol operations.

The sheriff said he took the legal action, because the proposed budget didn't adequately fund his department.

Harris's attorney says a lawsuit is still pending.

I'm Not Sure but...

I believe this is the Jenny-effect. Release prisoners AND cut police funding.
On the other hand...8 tickets..Really doesn't need extra patrolling, and if they'd quit wasting money busting small time pot growers and pot smokers they'd have money for other things they want or need.

Let the people decide!

Last Sunday the Michigan State Police did not even have car on duty, because of sick call. That leaves who to respond to one of Michigan's largest counties? Obviosly, that leaves the Schoolcraft County Sheriff's Department. Manistique Department Public Safety operates the ambulance, city patrols, and fire protection. Public Safety will be soon taking a financial hit with the loss of revenue sharing funds with the recent SOM budget cuts. I think there needs to be a collaborative effort to best protect and serve Schoolcraft County. I can see both sides with this debate, however we need to consider different revenue options to (if possible) to properly fund the Sherrif's Department, as they have many responsibilities from maintaining a safe jail to protecting our waters, highways, snowmobile trails, just to name a few. We should be appreciative to Sheriff Harris for keeping his campaign promise with the re-use of Camp Manistique, and putting people to work. I do have one question for our County Board, what do you have planned for the dilapidated county jail that has numerous health violations and cannot pass a Michigan Department Corrections inspection? I think we need stay in a holding pattern for now, find out how much money would be available from the SOM with the Camp Manistique conversion, then put it to the people for a vote for additional appropriations to operate a fiscally responsible sheriff Department with many responsibilites.

Keep up the good work commissioners

Hats off to the County Board for not letting the Sheriffs department push them around. Come on Grant come to terms with that you have to be fiscally responsible.

Our Commissioners

Our commisssioners are doing the best job they can with what they have. All of the County Commissioners are men from our community and they are looking out for all of our best interest. The decisions that they make are not easy. There jobs are not like mine and yours. When we walk out the door from our jobs it is done until we punch back in. We can go home at night and be with our families. These men have a 24 hour a day 7 day a week job trying to improve our community. We may not always like the way things work out but its all a part of a process. Do you think Obama can turn this country around in a year certainly not. These commissioners are doing there best and it will take time to turn things around. They would love to be able to give money to everyone that needs it but the money is not there to give. For instance your child wants a very expensive toy but money is tight. Do you buy the toy and forget about your mortgage? Or do you tell them you have to wait until we can afford it? I don't know about you but I would rather have a house to live in. The commissioners only have a limited amount of funds. Use your heads people. We need to support our commissioners! They have our best interest at heart. They have nothing to gain and a lot to lose.
