NEGAUNEE -- A move to save money means a restructuring of Upper Michigan post offices.  It'll impact eight post offices.

According to a post office spokesperson in Milwaukee, the moves are called Delivery Unit Relocations.

Simply put, the post offices that we all use, won't change.  However, the carriers will be moving their operations to a new post office.

Changing August 29, carriers at the Hermansville Post Office will work out of Powers.

Likely changing at the end of September, Hancock carriers will work out of Houghton, Negaunee carriers move to Ishpeming, and Bessemer letter carriers will be based in Ironwood.  These moves are currently under review, but will most likely take place.

Officials say this has already been done 53 times in the Midwest area.  It's saved the Postal Service $2.4 million.  They say it also improves efficiency and streamlines hours for clerks.

Customers won't see any change as hours and services will remain the same.

To the UP Wife. Your post reflects exactly what is being done. No clerks or carriers will be losing their job. However, there will no longer be a Post Master of Negaunee! This is also not just moving a management position around either - the position will be eliminated. Please get your facts straight in the future.

Close some smaller offices.

In Menominee County there are at least 4 post offices that are redundant. Ingalls, Nadeau, Spalding and Harris all have very few rented boxes, in fact some of the people in these communities are on their closest post office rural route. There must be many of this type of very small locations that could be serviced by a near-by office. We are as close as the computer or the mail carrier for getting stamps and other services.

these carriers have to re-locate? Was'nt it mentioned to out-$15,000.00? That's not enough to live on for a year. Would they also loose all their other bennies?

How much money can this save when they are keeping the same hours, Still paying for heat and lights and keeping all P.O boxes there?

If they want to save money why dont they deliver every other day or at least cut out Saturdays?Who has to get their bills one day early?Ever since I can remember they have been cutting public services and adding to the hand outs. They will not be happy until the government owns everything, then you will either work for the government or be on public assistance. Sounds like communist to me!
