UPPER MICHIGAN -- Eight Native American tribes in Michigan will divide more than $14.3 million in federal stimulus money to improve housing.  Two of those tribes are in Upper Michigan.

The Bay Mills Indian Community in Brimley will receive $2,000,000 and the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians in Watersmeet will receive $1,391,790.

The grants are designed to help Native American tribes improve and expand their housing supply, promote energy efficiency, and create jobs.

The grants are in addition to more than $7.5 million announced in July through the same programs.

RE: Native American's post

I for one complain because I see contradiction on behalf of the tribes in our areas. I see a race of people who are permitted "Gaming", make millions, billions from this enterprise that only they are permitted, and yet most of the Native Americans won't even work in the casino but are willing to collect "per cap" from the profits. You've built new schools, Fitness and Social programs, and the homes on the reservation are given to those who are documented members of the tribe. If there is blight and poverty in these residential areas on the casino it is solely the responsibility of those living there, not tax payers like myself. I complain, white woman I be, because you've been given more than ANY OTHER group who's land has been taken, it's people enslaved, it's religion and language thwarted and yet you feel a sense of entitlement to more. Some tribes in the US are in such dire straights in terms of poverty (out in Western America) and yet your entire race does nothing to help as you collect huge per caps each month. You worry about your race and it's heritage and yet your children and your children's children have no interest in learning their native language or customs. You claim the earth to be the "mother" and yet your people have and continue to kill every piece of wildlife that unfortunately happens upon Reservation land. I have witnessed alcoholism and unemployment on reservations, diabetic medical issues so severe due to alcohol abuse that many have wheelchairs; how can my tax money assist those who won't help themselves? This is why "White people" have issues, not something you wish to hear but yet needs saying in defense of "white people".

Hmmmmmmm?

I find this information a tad disturbing since taxes which will be paying for this are something not all native Americans pay. To those who think..."Look how much we've taken..." (meaning when the Europeans came and took the land), may I ask you what country or territory has not at one time or several times been conquered by another people and following this, what was the re-payment??? If you look into your ancestors, mostly European, you will see, like I do, that your ancestors' land was taken, religion forbidden, they were killed, enslaved, etc., and are you expecting something generations later as restitution for the crimes against your people? I have issues with certain races that proclaim such life hardships when it happened not to them but rather to their ancestors. No race has been exempt in this phenomenon of the human animal. I hate to think my tax dollars are going to help those who have been given far more than any other group and have done little to overcome their history and lack of motivation. Sorry, this will be a unpopular opinion but it is mine nonetheless.....now, anyone who wishes to answer the above questions, please do so, I welcome it.

I am in the same boat as you. My fiancée is 1/4 Chippewa...yet she still pays all the same taxes as everyone else.

In fact she doesn't even get any tribal benefits because we have yet to find her father and actually get her Indian papers in order.

Taxed like the rest

My husband is Native American. He pays all the same taxes as everyone else. There are only a select group of Native Americans (living in the tribal boundry areas)that get out of paying certain taxes. The rest of us are just average citizens. No special treatment here.

Is it just me

As I read these comments, I thought to myself, "no matter what the government gives to tribes, can it replace what's been taken?"

WHY?

Posted by Native American , Baraga, Michigan - Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at 12:00 p.m.

I would like to ask this question...WHY? is it everytime that the native american people get something, the white people have to complain about it. I think these comment postings are discriminating. Why when we read the news do we have to read stupid peoples comments too. Give me a break!!!

What??

Why on earth would this stimulus money be given to the tribe? They don't even pay the taxes everyone else does. They are given so many opportunities and advantages that they don't capitalize on that the idea of them getting more stimulus money to flush down the toilet (which they will) is absolutely ridiculous.

Too bad the government can't take in the fact the Tribes are making tens of millions with their casinos. What are they doing with that money? The Sault Tribe invested almost a billion dollars in Greektown, and lost as they filed bankruptsy. I find it perplexing why they didn't invest in their own housing and medical care with all that money. Isn't this the reason why they have casino's and the white and black man don't? Joe Q. Taxpayer pays though. Whats wrong with this picture? No wonder why this country is in trouble....
