SAWYER -- Hours of hard work paid off Saturday afternoon at the Family Fun Day at Little Trout Lake.

As part of the Michigan Works! "Earn While You Learn" Summer Program, teens from Gwinn, Sawyer, and Sands Township have spent four weeks cleaning up the park.

On Saturday, the group celebrated by hosting a Family Fun Day, featuring games, food, volleyball and basketball.

For organizers, it was a great way to show off  the group's effort and work.

"I really think it's important to get people out, just to see that kids in this area are making an impact," said supervisor Kathryn Miller.  "They want their community to be better, so they've been taking the time to fix the park up."

The event also featured concessions to help raise money for the Save the W campaign.

Absolutely agree with Sawyer Resident

I totally agree. It doesn't matter where you come from or what economic class, unsupervised kids with time to burn will always get into trouble. It is nice to see programs like this designed to guide kids and give them a sense of pride in their communities. I hope to see more of it in the future.

A bright hope for the future

It is really wonderful to see all these kids working together for the benefit of the community. Its even more amazing when we know of all the hate going around between Gwinn and Sawyer and here these kids are working together. It actually put an unexpected smile on my face because i have very little hope left for Sawyer. its so tiring living here. But my point is this is what Sawyer needs. Much of the trouble is from unsupervised children with too much time on their hands. This teachs them some respect for their community. We need more programs like this. There is hope yet....THANK YOU to all these wonderful kids :)
