MARQUETTE -- As part of a national effort to promote neighborhood spirit, the Marquette City Police Department grilled up lunch for Marquette City employees Tuesday.

The National Noon-Out event was one of several block parties held this afternoon and tonight across the country, including a handful in Marquette County.

Many more are planned for later in August, including some in Marquette, Ishpeming, and Republic.

"For all the employees to get together, just camaraderie, getting to know the people you work with," said Det. Sgt. Steve Snowaert of the Marquette Police Department.

The evening block parties, called National Night Out, are designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, while strengthening police-community partnerships.
