ONTONAGON -- Ontonagon County Circuit Court continues as normal this week, even though the judge has stepped down.

Judge Joe Zeleznik retired last Friday.  After two decades on the bench, the 65-year-old Zeleznik said he was simply getting old.

In a recent trial, he allegedly fell asleep during the proceedings.  It was declared a mistrial.

Governor Granholm will name his replacement.

But in the meantime, cases in Ontonagon Circuit Court will be heard by Judge Roy Gotham from Gogebic County.

As for the mistrial, the county prosecutor's office is still reviewing the case.

Your headline,"Court continues without judge," is grossly mis-representative and it is at odds with the information provided in the body of the story.

A new, substitute has been named to fill the vacancy from the elected judge's retirement.

The mis-trial which resulted from the elected judge's unfortunate nap on the bench is being pursued by the Prosecutor.

Essentially, there is no story here.

Procedures are in place to adequately address these routine developments and the citizens of Michigan are NOT negatively impacted by local incidents.
