CURTIS -- The scenic Great Lakes' coastlines across upper Michigan attract tourists from all over the country, but the inland lakes also bring in a lot of out-of-towners.

In eastern U.P. hotspots like Curtis, there are many of activities to keep you and your family busy for more than just a few days.

Whether you enjoy just relaxing and taking in the scenery from a bed and breakfast overlooking Big Manistique or you prefer being on the lake, there's lots to do in and around Curtis.  For big city folks, it's a nice way to get away from it all.

"It's beautiful out here really," explained Grand Rapids resident, Brittany Clausman.  "It's really quaint and the people are really nice and it's just refreshing to be up here."

"I like to be in the water, so we've been swimming and obviously kayaking and it's just been really fun," said visitor Danielle Robinson.

If camping is your thing, there are several campgrounds surrounding the lakes where you can bask in the sun or take in all the splendor.

"Do you see the view out there?  I like the view," explained seasonal visitor, Kathleen Michelin.  "It's a big contrast from out West.  Out West, we go and there's the desert and the desert flowers and the mountains, and here there are the beautiful trees and the green."

Although there's lots to do in the immediate Curtis area, locals say don't be afraid to get in the car.  Just a few miles away is the Seney National Wildlife Refuge, where you and your family can enjoy the "natural" part of Michigan, from the birds to the plant life.

"We love it up here," explained Plymouth, Michigan resident, Kari Avery.  "It's a gorgeous place, beautiful to see," said husband, Mark Avery.

Other unique spots not that far from Curtis include Whitefish Point, known for its bird watching and shipwreck museums and Tahquamenon Falls, which is known for its majestic landscape and waterfalls.

All in all, you'll stay entertained in and around Curtis.  And officials from the "Pure Michigan" campaign, who are currently working on a commercial for this area, know all too well how special this place truly is.

"This is about as "Pure Michigan" as you can get," explained Pure Michigan advertiser, Mark Lantz, "with the incredible abundance of natural beauty, beautiful small towns and an abundance of friendliness and hospitality of the people and some world class destinations in there."
