MARQUETTE -- For the past couple of days, you might have been hearing a Chinook helicopter in the skies over Marquette.  The helicopter was transporting Michigan National Guard Brigadier General Jim Anderson.  He was traveling to the Marquette Armory for a presentation about the road to reintegration for returning soldiers.

Monday, the Chinook and crew performed training missions over Marquette Township.

The 1988 Chinook served in Iraq, helped after Hurricane Katrina, and aided in extinguishing the Newberry Fire.

Although the chopper was just transporting people for this mission, it has some incredible lifting power.

"Basically the helicopter is a cargo helicopter used for heavy lifting," said chinook pilot Tim Miller.  "The gross weight of the helicopter goes up to 50,000 pounds.  We generally can lift between 18 to 20 thousand pounds."

Shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, the helicopter lifted off to drop the general off in Grayling before returning to Selfridge Air Base, north of Detroit.

ILK

I agree, Bruno is one miserable person.. Complain, complain, complain. Kinda guy if you walked with him on an 80 deg. morning with the sun beaming and birds chirping, you'd want to choke yourself after 10 minutes listening to his lousy, depressing philosophies. Just cuz some deer hunters like their booze does not mean they are violators. Shame on you. Sounds kinda stereotypical. A Chinook helicpoter flyover evokes feelings of patriotic, military accomplishment. Shame on You, Bruno.. Do you really feel like an accomplished citizen consistently crying about how bad deer hunters and the military act? Watching cartoons with my kids, I cannot help compare you to a character named Squidwort. If it weren't for our military, we'd all be heeding to ruthless ilk like Kim Jong Ill and Ahmadminijahd. God Bless our troops and what America stands for!

Pretty cool!

My family and I were fishing on Monday in the Chassell area and saw it go over. I thought it was so neat and it brought back memories of being a kid growing up around here, and seeing pretty often.
I agree w/ the training for the pilot too very good point made there! Being on Fort Knox w/ my husband when he was enlisted we would see all kinds of planes and other helicopters flying over, but never any chinooks, we (even as adults) enjoyed watching them fly over and still do when we do see them now a days.

I loveee

Seeing the Chinooks flying around down here, I wouldn't be complaining about actually seeing something different up there... There is better things to complain about.

Different feelings

I have to say that I saw this things landing and taking off in Ishpeming the other weekend and it was the coolest thing! It was also kind of freaky at the same time as it is definitely not a sight you see everyday in the UP. I am thankful that we don't. Other countries and seeing all kinds of military things flying over and driving by every day. I am so thankful that we do not have war in our backyard and witness these things as a common occurrence to our days. I much prefer being in awe of seeing it this one time in my life.

Conspiracy theory!!!!!

Ahhhh! It's a government plot, they are dropping off moose in Ishpeming!!!

Come on, it's a great training and P.R. opportunity for the military, and a safe method of transporting a military leader. Great to see, keep it up!

Cause he has a helicopter. If given a chance would you take a helicopter or drive a car? I my friend would take the helicopter any day over a car.

Get over yourself Bruno Tam. You must be one miserable person with not much of a life.

The tranporting of the general is a good way for the pilot to log training and required flight time.

Heard that sound before.

All that to fly some general around. What's the matter General Big Bucks couldn't drive up here in his own car?
