MICHIGAMME -- New owners are looking to bring new life to two closed Michigamme businesses.

The Michigamme Market reopened to customers last Thursday after being shutdown since November.

Marti Querfeld, who ran the business from 1992 to 2005, regained ownership of the business through foreclosure.

And the Moose Cafe will open early next month under new owners, William and Cathy Schooler, and a new name, the Hometown Cafe.

For the market, reaction has been positive.

"The response has been fabulous," said Querfeld.  "People are so happy to have the store open and had a fabulous weekend, and I hope it continues."

Both businesses understand the tough economic climate, but believe through summer tourism and quality and service, they'll be able to survive.

RE: Big Deal

This has been a gold mine and always will. Just has to run like a family business and it will stay afloat. I spent the winter there with it closed and it wasn't fun having to drive 9 miles to get a soda or a candy bar!
