Black River Falls Fire (Marquette County)

A tree falling on a power line and sparking a fire is the cause behind the Black River Falls Wildfire.

It scorched 806 acres of forestlands some seven miles southwest of Ishpeming, in the Black River Falls Area.

Hundreds of people in Ely Township are now in the process of picking up the pieces, after the fire tore through their property and homes.

For some, there was nothing left.

At least 21 homes were among the 33 structures destroyed by the blaze.

The wildfire is now 98 percent contained.

Luckily, there was no loss of life or injuries during the two-day fire.

Pinery Lake Fire (Baraga County)

The other big wildfire in the UP, in Baraga County is 685 acres in size.

The Pinery Lake Fire near L'Anse burned property belonging to the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Thursday, fire officials say they made good progress thanks to the weather.

That fire is now 85 percent contained and could be 100 percent contain by tonight.

The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community land, includes a cemetery that suffered some damage, and ski trails that also burned.

No injuries have been reported.

One home was destroyed.

A BIA fire investigator from Minnesota is on the scene looking for the cause of this wildfire.

PC Medic in Ishpeming has been taking donation items for those affected by the Black River Falls Fire over the past 24 hours.

They've set up their building as a drop off point and word has gotten around.

"We're bursting at the seams," says PC Medic's Scott Martin.

Now, they're encouraging families who need items to come to the PC Medic building on US-41 West and pick up what is needed.

They have furniture, clothing, and other items that have been generously donated by community members.

Martin says they've been working closely with the Salvation Army and the Red Cross.

They will hold a rummage sale next weekend to sell everything that has not been picked up at that time.  All proceeds from that will go to the Ishpeming Township Fire Department.

If you'd like to help out the evacuees in the Black River Falls Fire, the Salvation Army has a request.

An official says gift cards are the most helpful donation you can make, because they allow the evacuees to purchase what they truly need.

The gift cards could come from a store, a supermarket, or a fast food restaurant.

If you buy them, you can drop them off at the Westwood Mall Administrative Office, or at Beanarellas in the mall.

Or you can drop them off at the Salvation Army in Ishpeming or Marquette.

- Black River Falls Fire (Marquette County)

The fire has charred 750 acres at this point.

DNR units have eight plow and nine water units on site.

Numerous fire departments are also assisting in the blaze.

This is a very aggressive fire which started late afternoon Wednesday.

It burned through stands of jack pines and is west of County Road 581.

At this time, the fire has not jumped the road.

The fire is believed to have started around County Road CS and has since moved north to County Road CD.

Officials are saying the fire has not reached the Twin Pines area.

500 people have been evacuated and structures have been lost.

We're working to find more details at this time.

- Pinery Lake Fire (Baraga County)

This fire north of L'Anse has charred a couple hundred acres according to officials.

At this time, it's approximately 20 percent contained.

Two fire departments, L'Anse and Baraga, are battling the blaze while many others are on standby.

It is currently burning through hardwoods and has taken down a pine plantation.

Winds are currently out of the south-west and the fire is moving in a north-east direction.

Officials believe a wind shift is expected with the arrival of a cold front.

Temps should drop and winds will shift from the west.

The fire line is about three miles long.

So far, it's stayed on the west side of County Road 581.

Area firefighters have their hands full tonight battling at least two large wildfires.  One is in Ishpeming Township on County Road 581.  TV Six’s Heather Sawaski is on the scene.

The fire is burning out of control and spreading.  It has charred more than 100 acres and is being fueled by hot, dry, and extremely windy conditions.  The fire is threatening several homes.  Authorities are evacuating residents in the area and are advising people to stay away.

In another report of serious fire, this one just outside L'Anse it's located in what's known as the Pinery Location, not far from Skanee Road.  A resident reported seeing a large cloud of smoke in the area at about 6:15 Wednesday evening

The Department of Natural Resources is sending an incident management team to the fire.

A third fire has been reported at the Fish Lake Grade near Champion

TV6 will have more on these fires as information becomes available.

I think people were "curious" to see the fire just like people were "curious" to see the moose by the holiday gas station. Except that ended in an innocent animal being killed because people are nosy. I am lucky enough that my home wasnt in danger of the fire, but I do know many people who are affected by this. I know its hard, but I personally would rather wait on an update, and know every firefighter on scene was trying to save my home instead of trying to remove interfering people out of the way.

Disaster

Posted by U P, Esky - Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 3:00 p.m.

So does anyone know what started these sad, sad disasters? Probably a cigarette butt tossed out the window of a car. That’s all it takes to start a wild fire and do millions of dollars damage and put peoples live and welfare at risk. My heart and prayers go out to those affected by this disaster.

To Shayleene

Posted by Holly Letson, Ishpeming - Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 3:00 p.m.

Shayleene:

I'm sure there was some traffic trying to go out to 581 just to check out the situation, but don't be too quick to judge. I'm sure most wanted to check on things for loved ones. As you know, it's a small community and everyone knows everyone - it's hard to find a person in the community who wasn't concerned.

As for those who were just curious: chalk it up to human nature, and at that point nobody knew that houses were being lost - nobody was on a mission to see that. No worries about traffic past Stoneville Rd. though; the police did a great job directing traffic and deciding if each person's situation warranted travel on 581 south of that point. I know this first hand because as I made my way out, I was stopped by 4 different police officers to verify my reason for heading in that direction. I had a valid purpose, just like most others going in that direction. I went out to help my parents evacuate and save as many valuables/keepsakes as possible. My father is older with a heart condition, and knowing him he'd be trying to do too much.

As for right now, the best thing we can do and what I have been trying to do all day is get as much info to people as I can so that curiosity will not get the better of us. Everyone please be sure to read the post I made about the update that was given at WW today and their warnings about people out there now.

Let's stay positive and try to see things from all perspectives before we jump to conclusions!

Hey I called the Red Cross and they told me to take my donations to the Ishpeming Salvation Army and also personal care items such as tooth past and tooth brushes combs, ect.... take to the PC place next to West Wood high School. Our house burnt in 2007 we lost everything and we didn't live here then people did not help us a bit, we lived in North Carolina. I can tell you if people had the hearts you yoopers have the world would be a much better place.
Dont lose you love for your fellow man and keep a good heart love all you yoopers and proud to be part of you. Thanks to all the fire men and our prayers are with you.

Visualizing where the fire is?

Posted by Jessica D, Marquette - Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 2:12 p.m.

I would like to request that TV6 put up a map of where the fire is or suspected to be. It would also be nice to see a map of the evacuation zone. Even if if was a found a map and used paint to highlight exactly where it is.

I'm sure that you have the technology out there to do this.

I'm also aware of additional evacuations made this morning. I'm unsure of why that information is not beign posted so that individuals know exactly how close they are to the evacuation zone.

Hey everyone! I got this info from a friend whose mother went to the meeting at Westwood at noon:

Fire is approximately 75% contained. The rain has helped. There are a lot of losses. The fire crew will be mopping up this evening and tomorrow morning & feel the people can then start returning. As of now, it is still not accessible. They are policing the area & are warning people that you better belong out there to be there - everyone will be questioned on their presence.

I had grew up on County Road CD/PPV, and now live in town, but my heart instantly shattered when I heard the news. Several friends of ours have lost their houses/camps. My family and I would all hop in our vehicle and just go for a ride out to 581 for fun, and to re-live some memories, but now going out there will leave our hearts empty. From what I've heard everyone (the police, fire departments, Red Cross, DNR ETC) Have been doing a miraculous job! Thank you all so very much! One thing that did sicken my stomach is around 6-7 pm last night, We seen bumper to bumper traffic going out on to 581. I understand that people are curious, and we want to know what is happening to OUR land, but going out there to watch someones house/life burn away is horrible, and the people who did it should be ashamed of themselves. They are having a hard enough time trying to get the residents out safely and people use this horrific tragedy to sight see? You all know who you are, just give it some thought, because if your house was going up in shambles, you'd be upset too! Please everyone, if you don't have a reason to be out there stay away! Anyways god bless everyone involved, you are in our thoughts and prayers. I personally will be donating money, toiletries and so on. May god be with you during this tragic time, and may be give you the strength to accept and understand. GOD BLESS THE U.P.!!!!!!!

Stay strong, Yoopers

Posted by mukkada 13, Wisconsin - Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 1:07 p.m.

I grew up in Green Creek and my heart goes out to everyone who has been affected by this terrible fire, and the one in the L'Anse area, too, especially the people who lost their homes and any pets and other belongings. My parents still live out on 581 and thankfully their home was spared. A big thank you and much gratitude goes out to all of the firefighters and other emergency personnel who have worked through the night to try and get these fires under control. I'll contact the Red Cross and Salvation Army, but if anyone hears of any other special benefits to help raise money, please post about it because I would like to make a donation and I'm sure other out-of-state Yoopers will as well. Shirley Bushong and everyone else, stay strong.

HORRIBLE NEWS COVERAGE on these fires

Posted by Concerned Ishpeming Resident S., Ishpeming - Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 12:58 p.m.

Yesterday when this all first started, me nor others knew what was going on, I was scared out of my mind when I saw the thick smoke, I immediately turned on TV6 and NOTHING! Then next option was 107.7 NOTHING.
VERY upset that neither radio or tv stations had any kind of info. The only time the tv station had any info was at there regular news time. Hello don't you think that maybe you should have put a fire ticker at the bottom of the screen ASAP, to let people know that there was a forest fire.
I do praise TV6 for now having the fire update ticker on the bottom, but hello, it's all the same info that they have had since 5:30 this morning. The time is
1:00. There has to be some new info by now!!!!
Has the fire spread etc.

Another praise for the TV6 website for there updates, but HELLOOOO not everyone has a computer or internet access!!
So these situations need to be handled better by all radio and tv stations for future fires etc.
And when situations occur, report all towns and cities, there are people that have houses and families living all through-out the U.P that would like to know what is happening.
Don't just air your own area, I feel Marquette does that all the time. You do have other cites around you!

One last thing, thanks Vicky Crystal for all your updates on the morning news.
That's the way news should be handled!

THANK YOU so much

As i read through all these comments, i see many of you bickering and fighting, like usual. This is a horrible situation for everyone, mostly the people who have lost there homes and are wondering if they will have one. Please only post here if you are looking for more updates, or a family member. All people in a community need to come together in times of need, arguing over school and biking is immature. Sit back relax, keep informed, and pray for everyone. God bless!

lets pull together, not nitpick

Posted by J D, mqt - Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 12:21 p.m.

The most annoying thing when reading these comments is from the mindless rants of the complainers. I am so sorry for those that lost their homes. I am going to see what I can do to help, give money, volunteer, whatever. This could happen to any of us in the UP. We are surrounded by LOTS of forest. Count your lucky stars if you were not affected by yesterday's events.

What's going on in Baraga County????

Posted by J K, Indian Head Park, IL - Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 12:06 p.m.

WLUC, I realize you get more AD revenue from Marquette County than Baraga, but don't you have an FCC obligation to serve all parts of your viewing area? WHERE ARE PINERY LAKES, BARAGA UPDATES??

so sorry to hear

So sorry to hear about the houses lost. My heart goes out to the Bushongs, my former neighbors growing up, and current neighbors to my parents. Although my parents house was spared it feels like a huge loss to know so many wonderful families lost their homes. Your attitude about surviving because you are Yoopers is inspiring and you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

As the wife of a a DNR fire officer out on the Ishpeming fire, at least an update saying there are no injuries, seeing how cell phones are turned off to concentrate on fighting it, is better than nothing. Though being out there is dangerous enough for the professionals, please be careful and stay out of their way. It's hard enough without extra people around, let alone with the media. Just all stay safe and be extra careful!!!!

Did I miss something?

581 RED CROSS UPDATE

Posted by April Lawer, Ishpeming - Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 11:21 a.m.

I just got this from my sister on facebook (I have no other actual fire updates at this time):

Looking for a way to help?? Red Cross is in need of care packages for those who are evacuated and those who have lost their homes. These items include toiletries, etc. and other everyday items that one might need if they have lost everything. Please put items in a large Ziploc baggie and deliver to the Westwood High School.

Biking Comments

Why are people wasting their time even acknowleging the poor taste posts about biking and other crap that flat out does not matter and the people that matter understand that. don't dignify something like that with a response.

I am so sorry to hear about your home. Thankfully you are safe. I also have a friend who lives on CDA who is lucky to have gotten out with his life from what I have been told. Thankfully he also is okay. I am sure his home was not as fortunate. We are all thinking of you, the other people on 581 and of course the rescue and fire personnel.

Updates?

Posted by Still Concerned, Ishpeming - Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 10:59 a.m.

While some of you may be able to sit in front of the television today, others of us have to work. Any recent updates? There hasn't been an update since 8:30 this morning. It's now 11:00. Any location of the fire at this point would be nice. An update from TV6 saying they don't have an update would be better than silence.

This too shall pass...

Posted by Sarah Kratz, Ishpeming - Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 10:57 a.m.

My heart goes out to everyone who was affected by this tragedy. I work at the Shell station and many of our customers will have lost their homes and garages and camps by the time this has all passed. It is devastating to hear that news and feel the sadness in the air. Please, everyone, try to help out in anyway possible. If you can, give money. If you can't give money, give time. If you can't give time, please give a hug and prayer to your friends, neighbors, and co-workers. The Salvation Army is setting up relief efforts, so I would suggest starting there first. Let's call on this great community to rally and live outside the normal comfort zones. It starts with us and we can all help make a difference, small or large, in people's lives. Take care, I wish everyone strength.

Perhaps maybe people aren't news hungry and more nervous, scared and worried about their friends and loved ones, about all of their homes, pets, belongings, etc. Possibly they, myself included, need any bit of information to fill in the blanks of what is happening to our loved ones and the area. This fire is not under control and therefore leaves even more loved ones in it's path. Possibly knowing anything more than what we did even an hour ago helps to fill in the feeling of helplessness that we are all having/sharing. And yes, there isn't a person posting here or otherwise who does not commend the brave people trying to saving everything and everyone that they can. I am sure they are exhausted but are continuing to do their jobs to keep us all safe. No one denies them that. Everyone is truly grateful and continue to share such.

581 Update

Posted by April Lawer, Ishpeming - Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 10:28 a.m.

I drove out that way earlier and police have the road blocked starting at the Faith Lutheran Church, not at Stoneville like the article says. I was able to go to my parents' house, which is fine thank God. From what I've heard the fire is still burning and smoldering on the south end of the mail route road (CD) but hasn't gone any farther. That was between 9 and 9:30 this morning.

On another note, I have to disagree with the supposedly competent news coverage on this situation. TV6 has been boasting about being the best source in the area but yet when I turned on the station last night there was no ticker at the bottom of the screen to say where the fire was, where it was going, who was being evacuated and where they could be evacuated to. The fact that there wasn't anything on the radio is dispicable too. If it wasn't for friends who have friends in the police dept. and fire dept. and cell phones not many people would have known what was going on. Sorry TV6 but Facebook has done a better job at keeping people up to date. Pretty pathetic isn't it?

I just read through all of the posts & to the residents & family of those living out in the effected area, my heart goes out to all of you along with my prayers. As far as the rest of the news hungry people out there... GROW UP!!! Rescue workers are doing everything they can to control the blaze & TV6 is doing WAY more to cover this tragedy than they should because of the extra risk to live & attention the profesionals have to take away from the event to also keep them safe. The coverage that has been on the TV & online has been exemplary & the news teams should be commended for all of the hard work they have done, the rescue workers are out there risking their lives for the people out there & the surrounding area. People looking for recreation reasons for news... watch the television, they keep flashing the updates across the bottom of the screen, this web page is also quite active & the person/s updating it with the new info are doing quite a great job too. Before people complain about others jobs, make sure you know what is entailed before passing your judgements. I take my hat off to the TV6 news teams & web people because they are doing a great job just as the rescue workers are battling the blaze.

People are so worried about school being cancelled so they can go biking allll day.Give me a break,It makes me sick.Instead of riding bikes all day go to Westwood and see if you can help people or help volenteer. So many people lost their homes and belongings and the others are so selfish they just think about themselves and riding their bikes. Please put yourselves in their shoes and what if you lost your home or loved ones. This is serious and isn't funny one bit.My husaband and I have family and friends that live in 581 area and all we can do is pray for them and be here for them when they need us.I can't believe people are so rude, selfish, and mean.Hopefully everyone stays safe and the fire can be put out soon.

Westwood and Radio Stations

Posted by Holly Letson, Ishpeming - Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 1:18 a.m.

Hey everyone...praying for all you Green Creekers out there. I was out there earlier helping my parents evacuate and it was pretty intense. Their house (Terry and Betsy Lawer's) is on the north side of the mail route road and my dad is still there - the house is still standing - and he can't see flames so it's still a bit south from that - I heard from someone that it is currently at the old ballpark (south side of the mail route road - Co Rd CD)...1:00 a.m.

As for help at Westwood: I was there earlier helping the Red Cross. They had very few (if any) staying the night so for now I think they are ok with help. They commented on what a wonderful community we must have because so many have obviously taken all of these families in! I think the best thing the rest of us can do is to keep the updates going here on TV6's website and on sites like Facebook and MySpace.

And as for radio stations: Red Cross workers tried contacting them and then I tried as well. We didn't get an answer!!!

Again...prayers to all of you and especially to those who have now lost so much.

Yeah I agree with the person from Caspian who mentioned about the following:
You'll post that persons comment about biking and getting school off but you did not post the comment I made regarding the fire? I used to live on 581 and my mom was evacuated. I'm 8 hrs away in Bloomington and I read this page as much as "mitch" from ishpeming with his bike reads it!

Honestly, I know that someone reads these comments before they are allowed to be posted. To continuously allow "Mitch" and his buddy to comment about biking is not only sad, but pretty irresponsible on the part of the person giving approval. It seems pretty obvious that these two are making light of a very serious situation!

Can Anyone tell me if the fire has reached 34601 county road 581? I was talking with my friend on the phone around 630pm and now the phones appear to be down & I am very worried and want to be sure her & her family got out safely and or if her house may still be standing. Can anyone advise so I may let her family know? Thanks

Camps on Island Lake

Posted by Dan Sleeman, Ish - Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 11:57 p.m.

The fire started by Rosewalds Camp and went north from there. Camps on Island lake are safe as long as the wind does not shift. I was at Sleemans Pond and Black River Falls until 9:00.

Shame on you TV 6

Posted by Nicole Thurston, Caspian - Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 11:43 p.m.

Honestly, I know that someone reads these comments before they are allowed to be posted. To continuously allow "Mitch" and his buddy to comment about biking is not only sad, but pretty irresponsible on the part of the person giving approval. It seems pretty obvious that these two are making light of a very serious situation!

All of you affected by these fires, I hope you remain safe. As frustrating as this "waiting" may be, please try to remain patient. Here in the Upper Peninsula, we band together to help those in need, and neighbors, families and friends will be willing to help!! Hopefully the most of you will be able to return home soon. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank to all of the emergengcy workers out there doing their best to get these fires under control!

SRSLY?!

Posted by T Niemi, Marquette - Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 11:42 p.m.

I can't believe the people on here only worried about whether or not there's school tomorrow so they can go biking "ALL DAY" blah blah blah. People are losing their homes and everything they have. Instead of worrying about ourselves all the time we need to look out for each other and pray for everyone's safety (and their homes). That is all.

As of 11:30, some houses in the bird streets off 581 are also burning.
The fire is still out of control because of the wind, and it's still moving fast.

My daughter's home is a road away from the 581 Store, so if anyone knows if the fire has come that far north, please comment. My daughter & granddaughter have evacuated, but knowing if they'll have a home to go back to would be appreciated. And may God keep all those working to control the fires safe from harm.

Forest fire

Posted by Heidi Hastings, National Mine - Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 11:16 p.m.

When something this serious happens it should also be on the radio!! We were out in the woods and had no clue what was going on. But if it would have been on the radio stations we would have known! So just for the record put it on the radio because someone that was with us could not get home to save his animal and had he known.... he could have gotten home in time!! This is a very scary thing that should have been on all radio stations for those of us that were with no cell phone service!!!!

I knew something was wrong this afternoon when the fire sirens went off and I saw firetrucks at numerous times throughout the day on the move. My worst concern came around 7 PM when I saw a DNR flatbed speed through town with a dozer on the back.

Why aren't there updates scrolling on the bottom of the screen. If this were downstate there would be something constantly going across the bottom of the screen keeping the area informed. If this is "Upper Michigan's Source" Please keep Upper Michigan updated!!

Update

Posted by sarah Pietro, Tennessee - Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 10:51 p.m.

Just talked to my father who was at the fire. Cant vouch for all the information but as of about 10:00pm 18 structures had been been burned to some degree. The fire has stayed thus far on the West side of 581 and is continueing to move north. The winds have died down a bit so hopefully will give the workers a upper hand. Last heard the fire was close to the 581 cash store area.

Hard to say, but please be patient.

Posted by Mary Adams, Ishpeming - Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 10:48 p.m.

The crews are out there working their tailfeathers off trying to contain this fire. As of 10pm, according to officals that I have talked to, they cannot say definitely how many structures have been lost, nor can they say when they can get it under control. These high winds are making it very difficult for the crews to fight it. If your not in the immediate area, please, stay away. If you have been evacuated, go to Westwood High School where the American Red Cross has set up a receiving station and at bare minimum, check in, as you may have a family member searching for you, and will check in with them. I hope all stay safe from this fire, I'm praying for all evacuees, fire fighters, DNR, and Police Departments doing their jobs. Please don't make their jobs harder than necessary, and if you don't need to be there, don't go to the fire. You can't get past the barracaides anyway.

581 Fire

Posted by Heather Harmala, Ishpeming - Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 10:37 p.m.

The last I heard, they are blocking the 581 off at Stoneville road. Many homes have been lost, the fire was about 30 minutes away from the Lutheran Church. Smoke is thick and heavy at the top of Powderhouse hill. (Big hill right after the 4-way stop from Pine Street) From what I understand, everyone and everything South of Island Lake Road is ok...the fire hasn't turned that way. Let's all say a prayer for those that have lost homes and the brave men and women that are trying to control this fire.

What is going on up there with the fires? I hear houses are burning down and people were evacuated literally hours ago and yet nothing more than to announce there is a fire? This is the information age and we are counting on you to have more up to date information.
Thanks.

Let the professionals do their job without having spectators getting in the way. I'm sure TV6 will keep everyone updated on what's going on. Stay safe, everyone, especially those brave firefighters who are fighting the blazes.
