L'ANSE TOWNSHIP -- A Houghton man is dead after a kayaking accident on the Silver River in L'Anse Township.

According to the Baraga County Sheriff's Department, 47-year-old Richard Honrath, Jr. became pinned under a tree in fast-moving rapids.

Deputies pulled Honrath from the river Friday night around 8:20 p.m.  He was transported to Baraga County Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Honrath was traveling with his partner, 38-year-old Dave Bullock of St. Johns, Michigan.  He told police he was unable to rescue Honrath Jr with a throw rope.

Bullock said that he and his partner had been kayaking together for about 15 years and were familiar with the Silver River.

Thoughts and prayers

Posted by Jeff Edwards, Grand Rapids - Monday, April 20, 2009 at 12:08 p.m.

What a horrible story to see in the MTU Alumni e-mail newsletter this morning. As an alumnist of the Environmental Engineering program at Tech (and a former student of Dr. Honrath), my thoughts and prayers go out to his family as well as the entire Civil and Environmental Engineering Department.

May God grant all of you the strength to make it through the days ahead.
