LANSING -- The money from the federal stimulus package is starting to be allocated to Michigan.

Tuesday, the Governor's office was told by the Obama administration that the state would be getting $847 million for roads and bridges.  Of that, $139 million must go to urban areas, $96 million to the suburbs, and $19 million to rural areas, which are described as having less than 5,000 people.

In addition, $25 million will go to what's called mandatory transportation enhancements.

The remaining $568 million will be allocated on the approval of the state legislature.

TV6 has pledged to monitor the expenditure of the federal stimulus funds throughout the year to make certain the Upper Peninsula gets its fair share.

Grow up, people!

I don't see why TV6 is posting these comment between citizen x and Kathy. Grow up, you two. If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all yada yada yada.
And to stay relevent to the topic, the UP needs the money, but I wouldn't be suprised if we don't get a lot because the LP has a lot more to deal with. There I'm compromising you two! =)

Kathy, I recommend that you move to the UP and see how we have it here. Poor roads and infrastructure are key problems here. These problems didnt just pop up over night. They have been issuses with the UP forever. The UP doesnt even exist to the state government (except when they need some tax money or to plant some wolves). If you think we have ever been treated fairly here, you must be from somewhere else and just move here. Those of us who have lived here all our lives know how terribly we are treated. On another note, you need not down-play gun ownership. Noting how you assumed I was talking about guns, you must be a liberal. I suppose you think only the police need guns eh? If nobody but police had guns the police wouldnt need them either, right?. Guns are to protect the people from a tyranical government (read constitution 2nd ammendment). Take away the peoples right to own them, and you'll be wishing people had them..yes, even a liberal like you needs a right to own a gun. I'm not making a personal attack toward you, but more a few words to you and everyone who thinks like you....liberalism will be the death of this nation..... X

X: I highly doubt that any "leftist" would attack you for your views on this site. Right-wing, gun lovers are much more likely to do you harm, but I'm certain that no one would over your comments. Have your name and address exempt from the phone book if you're truly afraid. That being said, let the grown-ups do the posting on here. If you simply come here to harass others and their opinions then please don't bother posting.
I'd like to stress that my views of the UP and government handling are not "defeatist." I simply feel that the state has a plan to fix the larger areas first, as they are more likely to bring growth and prosperity to our state.

Own state

Posted by Yooper north, North - Wednesday, March 04, 2009 at 11:01 p.m.

Maybe They should let us become our own state.
I could be wrong, but with the mines, lake, ski hills,
rivers, ect.i think we would do good or better on our
own.Like i said could be wrong.

Kathy, oh Kathy

Posted by citizen x, delta county - Wednesday, March 04, 2009 at 8:08 p.m.

Kathy, i cannot respect your opinion. I have a hard time comming to any sort of terms with defeatist attitudes. Things like "we dont deserve good government" and "well, it is better than the last one" are phrases used by people who only want to walk the line. Walking the line in society is dangerous. Soon we'll all be slaves to the system. Mother doesnt know best when "Mother" is the government. As far as the name I use here.... Do you really think my position on issues sits well with the leftists? Like I need someone threatening my family because I wont get in line.

I'm sorry that I voiced my opinion and am now being attacked by someone who won't even use their name. I just don't think that it would be very good for the state to put an abundance of money into the UP when companies or people don't want to locate here. I LOVE the UP and would love to see good things happen to it, but it just cannot compete with Detroit, Ann Arbor or Lansing. Please respect my opinion without critisizing me or calling me an "apologist."

I'm not sure what you mean by cement cracks poured for 4 lanes? but i agree going from 4 to 3 increases chances for a head on, but it should not matter whether its painted lines, cement breaks, guardrails, cement pillars, or anything else. if you are paying attention to the road you are on you will notice lane changes. if you are day dreaming looking at the sky talking on your phone playing with your gps unit, obviously you wont see the lines. taking your time doesn't hurt either, as I have seen too many speedy needy's using the turning lane to pass.

No surprise

Well..I remember sending a complaint to MDOT regarding the disgusting roadside parks in the U.P. I compared them to the lavish ones that exist downstate. They have flushing toilets and running water!!! For the amount of tourism we get up here I don't get why we do not have the same. It is just a prime example of how little money comes here versus the Lower Peninsula. In the end, all I got was an apology.

If you really think that people can follow painted lines for 3 lanes versus cement cracks poured for 4 lanes, your looking for a head on!!!

To Kathy

Posted by citizen x, delta county - Wednesday, March 04, 2009 at 12:22 p.m.

Kathy, that is the problem, the UP has been set on the back burner for a long time. We dont rate like the LP, and you think that is OK? You're right though, we dont pay any taxes or buy any gasoline or anything here (sarcasm, in case it wasnt obvious). 5% should get us 5%..that'd be about 45 million bucks. I am guessing we'll get less than that. Fair is fair, stop being an LP apologist Kathy.

U.P.

Posted by Nate F, SSM - Wednesday, March 04, 2009 at 11:44 a.m.

Most of these comments are pretty dead on that the U.P. will see very little of this money. Majority of it is focused on transportation issues in urban areas, which will be Lansing, Detroit, etc. But some should trickle up to us and help with a few transportation projects.

Yooper Vern, glad to see a fellow Powers resident, however the reasons for reducing 4 lanes to 3 are more than you think. Yes speed is one factor but safety and maintenance are others. Call your road commission or MDOT TSC and ask about it. You'll get all the info you need.

Don't complain

Posted by Kathy Zimmerman, Ishpeming - Wednesday, March 04, 2009 at 11:18 a.m.

If it's good for the LP then it's good for ALL of Michigan, including the UP. Please stop complaining; it won't do anything good. The UP isn't as important as the urban areas of the state. We have less than 5% of the state population as well. I know it's sad because the UP is in such bad shape, but Warren County is equally as bad and more likely to be utilized by visitors and companies.

She'll Use It On The U.P.

Posted by Yooper Vern, Powers - Wednesday, March 04, 2009 at 11:08 a.m.

I'm sure Grandholm will use it in the U.P. just like she ought to. To take away more of our 4 lane roads and make them 3 lane because were getting too much traffic and we need to slow down!!! Or maybe we'll get another passing lane!

I agree

Posted by Forever A Yooper, Ishpeming - Wednesday, March 04, 2009 at 10:06 a.m.

I doubt that we Yooper will see much if anything of this. I don't think Grandholm knows we are actually part of Michigan and not Wisconsin.

U.P. Stimulus Money?

Posted by Paul Walker, Manistique - Wednesday, March 04, 2009 at 10:01 a.m.

Firstand foremost, I want to thank T.V. 6 News for their excellent commitment to covering such an important issue for us here in the U.P. Recently, I submitted a 'Letter to the Editor' to T.V. 6 News that is readily available on this site regarding U.P. Stimulus money. I have made several references that the Michigan Legislature will determine the dispersing of said stimulus money, and of course this T.V. 6 News article references the same. It should be publicly known that very recently the Governor has commented publicly that she believes, she alone has the right to decide what projects to fund with the stimulus money. This is becoming a very contentious issue in Lansing, as it would effectively keep your voice, on a more local level, through your senator and state representative from being heard. There will be an on-going effort between the legislature and her to resolve the issue, but it well could end up in the Courts if she will not concede that the legislature has an appropriations role in this. Senator Bishop has hinted that he may well be compelled to file such an action if the Governor acts to allocate the money unilaterally.

LMAO

I read this news story and have to admit, I could'nt keep from laughing. Michigan is to get $847 million dollars for roads and bridges??? You can all bet the few million that has already been decided on will be in the three biggest down-state counties. I mean get real, they are the reason we are taxed to death and then some. $568 million to be allocated by Legislature? Give me a break. It should ALL be split EVENLY to ALL counties for the road commisions to determine. I have doubt that we (in the U.P.) will even see 1%.

Thank you TV6

Posted by citizen x, delta county - Tuesday, March 03, 2009 at 7:33 p.m.

All yoopers should appreciate TV6 and their efforts to make sure we all get a fair shake. It is our money too, lets hope that we can get our share. I was totally against the package, but now that it is passed, we (yoopers) might as well use it. Keep up the good work TV6.
