IRON MOUNTAIN -- Anyone who has been in the grocery store recently has noticed that prices have continued to rise despite high unemployment rates and a problematic economy. Food pantries have experienced a 30 percent increase in the amount of people looking for assistance, however, many people who don't qualify for assistance are still struggling to put food on the table.
That's where the SHARE program comes in. It's a non-profit food-buying club that only requires its members to spend a minimum of fifteen dollars a month on food. There are no eligibility requirements or membership fees, but buying through the club could save you 30 to 50 percent of what you would pay in a grocery store, including everything from steak to organic produce.
"It's important to buy good quality food at a reasonable price and you can save, especially if you have a large family," said Nancy Schaub, site coordinator for the Iron Mountain area.
Clients order their food once a month through their site coordinator or online. With the click of a mouse, you can pick out whatever food you'd like through the SHARE Web site and pay right online with your debit or credit card. The program also accepts payment through cash, check or food stamps via the site coordinators.
Food is then shipped from a warehouse in Wisconsin to site locations in the Upper Peninsula, Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
