BARAGA COUNTY -- Two people are dead after what appears to be a domestic violence incident in Baraga County Thursday night.

According to the Michigan State Police, it began around 9 p.m. Thursday night on the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Reservation.

An argument broke out between a male suspect and his girlfriend.  After stabbing her to death, he fled the scene.

State police troopers located the suspect's vehicle driving on US-41.  He crashed the car and refused to surrender to police.  The suspect was shot after lunging at the trooper and later died at the Baraga Memorial Hospital.

US-41 was closed for more than five hours as a result.

The incident remains under investigation.  Names have not been released by authorities at this time.

JUSTICE?

Posted by Arleigha Lieffers, Grand Rapids - Monday, February 09, 2009 at 10:34 a.m.

As someone who can see both sides of this story, as many of you have proved you cannot, there is no such thing as justice in a situation like this. How many of you who have such strong opinions are actually involved and even deserve a right to comment?! He was not just a "Common Criminal" who "got what he deserved". Did you ever think that the reason he contacted others after the fact was in contect to the fact that he felt remorse over his actions? He charged a state trooper with no weapon, dont you think that attests to the fact that he wanted to pay for his sin? And to this young women's family iam sorry for your loss, but you know who killed her and i hope that can help bring closure. To KeJuan's family i hope that you to can find some kind of closure, as well.

sad thing

Posted by Satisfied here in the, U.P. - Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at 7:13 p.m.

I don't think that anyone is denying the fact that BOTH families are grieving over the loss of their loved ones. A crime was committed and the person who KILLED another human being ultimately paid for that crime with his life. There is right in this world and there is wrong. He did wrong and it doesn't matter what led up to it. He ended a person's life and he knew it was wrong so he ran and he attempted to run from being held accountable for that. A big part of what has gone so wrong in this country is that people are NOT being held accountable for their actions. Nobody is saying that it isn't sad, nobody is saying that his family doesn't have the same right to mourn the loss. I think what they are saying is that he broke a law, he killed a person. The police were right to defend themselves. And it saves the taxpayers money - we don't have to pay for his defense, trial and housing.

This comment is to Ash H. from Grand Rapids: Did you know that your friend was on the sexual offender list? Everyone around here has an idea why he did this because she got sick of supporting him and his habits and went home that night to tell him this and he flipped out on her. Now those poor little kids have to grow up with no mother.

Sadly Missed

Posted by Amy Supanich, L'Anse - Sunday, January 25, 2009 at 1:06 a.m.

I have lived my entire life in Baraga County and this is the biggest and saddest tragedy we have seen. I knew this girl and went to school with her. I have two children close to the same age as hers, I could never imagine how them kids are going to be without their mother. She was a wonderful young lady and the best mother she could be. She will be greatly missed around here. My deepest sympathy to her family. RIP

also thanks to the MSP...you did a great job

yall just need to listen

Posted by ash h, grand rapids - Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 10:23 p.m.

first and foremost the criminal you are talking about is my god brother, and second, the girl was my friend. the story is all wrong. if the media would get their story right then maybe yall will know what happened. Cant nobody bring back neither one of our family members. We are all grieving here. before anyone decides to critize somebody know what you are talkin about. I loved both of them, and i miss them dearly. This whole investigation crap needs to stop because they dont know what was said and done before they both died but the person that talked to them before it happened and after it happened. I just ask that yall pray for both families because her kids lost their mother and his kids lost their father. and to the police who is suppose to be investigating this talk to the right person that called you. i am so tired of people judging people. just imagine what if it happened to any one of your families, then you will know how we feel.

What on Earth????

To Someone concerned- Baraga. First of all My heart goes out to the trooper and his family as well as their victims families.
Concerned Baraga, I'm not ripping on you, but... I'll tell you what on earth!
Kids can't play tag in the school yard because it isn't fair for a kid to be, IT! You can't be on deck, it's too dangerous. You can't slide head first into home, you'll get hurt. The score is tied, both teams win. (that's why kids play sockor) When the kid that practices baseball everyday, hits the ball on the first pitch, the batter coming up behind him (who only picks up his glove on game day) gets 20 swings to hit the ball because it isn't fair if he strikes out. What I'm getting at is every kid is told that they are equal to everyone else. (Truth be said, everyone isn't created equal) This is why they don't respect their mothers, fathers, grandparents, spouses, The Police, the judges, let olone strangers....The world owes them a living. Sorry to say but, the best days this world has seen, are gone!
Also 1 more thing-I know I spelled socker wrong. That's because it isn't a sport, it's an activity!

The murder of this young wonmen was tragic, but at least the perp was shot instead of being sent to jail with TV and three squares on the tax payers dime.

A note to citizen X

The people who want to "coddle" prisoners in Michigan are NOT liberal people, but the result of the Republican Congress!

Cable TV is a control mechanism for prisons to keep them calm. The medical is a bit much, but there has been lawsuits due to negligence so this is the state doing a CYA move.

An eye for an eye was from the old testament...in case you haven't noticed there is a NEW TESTAMENT that says different.

Throwing around political jargen is ignorant and has nothing to do with the problem(s) at hand. It's a picture....big deal! Go to a different web-site if you don't like it!

Sympathy to the family's

Posted by b.j.m cain, baraga - Friday, January 23, 2009 at 3:39 p.m.

I would like to first say I am sorry for the loss of such a beautiful person. The victim was well known in this area as a young, vibrant woman who was loved by all that knew her. It is a somber day for all of us who knew the victim and her family. I read the comments on here and it angers me to see people commenting on the picture of the hand and gun, why dont you put yourself in this position as it can happen to anyone. That picture does not matter what matters is that there is a family that is hurting and needs the privacy and the respect of the community so they can began to heal. Please show some respect.

I can't believe this happened in such a small place.
people think it wont happen to them because things like that dont usually happen around here.
but now maybe people will double think that.

sorry for your losses.

my prayers go out to the family.

Posted by Rhonda Heikkinen, Ontonagon - Friday, January 23, 2009 at 2:15 p.m.

I just want to say my thoughts and prayers go to her children and the rest of the family. this was a horrible tragedy that will be talked about for a long time, and that talk can and does hurt the family. Losing someone is hard enough but to have to deal with the "talk around town" and the speculations.....well that just makes the grieving process harder. Also, my prayers go out to the MSP officer because this will never leave their mind either.

Well said, Concerned in Baraga

Thank you Ms. Well Said, and amen. I'm a downstater who heard this on our news this morning and my heart dropped -- I thought it could be one of my family members who live in the Baraga area. The drugs, drinking and violence have to stop. My condolences to BOTH families, and may you find healing. You could have been me. To the rest of you, get a grip.

Death by cop?

Posted by Melody J, UP - Friday, January 23, 2009 at 2:06 p.m.

Is it possible the killer may have intended to have it end that way? Everyone knows what happens if you make a move towards a police officer, especially after murdering someone.

Can't begin to imagine how one provides either type of news to family members - my prayers to the young ladies family and the killers family. What a nightmare.

What on Earth......

Posted by someone concerned, Baraga - Friday, January 23, 2009 at 2:02 p.m.

First and foremost I would like to send my sincerest sympathy out to the victim's family. I knew these two people they lived not to far from I do. I just want to remind people that regardless of what the killer has done he still has a family hurting out there right now please be sensitive to that fact. This "sorry mess" as someone put it is sorry than you think. There are two beatiful children that now have lost their mother. The victim had a name and a very beatiful face. She was a nice and pleasant person full of life. I used to think the killer was a nice person, I had no idea that he was capable of doing the harm that he has. I am saddend by what I keep reading on the news about our small UP. What on Earth is going on...Drugs, vilolence, murder, breakins. Something has to be done and it needs to happen soon.

Female Hand,

Who gives a rat about the use of the image on this story.

Grow up and show respect for those involved.

re: photo inappropriate.

"The photo of a female hand firing a pistol is inappropriate and offensive. It has nothing to do with this story and is sensationalistic and unprofessional."

First off, I don't think that's a female hand, but that's irrelevant. As for "nothing to do with the story" the story is partly about the cops shooting a suspect, I think a gun and a cop car is pretty relevant. Would a bloody knife had been better. As for the whole "sensationalistic" aspect, where have you been for the last 40 years, that's journalism 101. People eyes tend to go to bold headlines with exclamation points, bright colors, and cool graphics. Seeing a gun and a cop car makes normal people go, "hey, that must be the link to the story about the cops that killed that guy who killed that girl"

RE: Photo

Merry, how can you tell that image is of a female hand? That's about as nondescript as it could get. This is the stock image that TV6 always uses for stories like this...

Merry Sanders?

Posted by citizen x, delta county - Friday, January 23, 2009 at 12:36 p.m.

Merry, you are wrong. I think they should have video taped the incident and shown it on air. I would bet that would be a deterent to at least one person who some day might decide to attack a police officer. In the days of public executions, people didnt run out and do crimes much. Todays liberal thinking america thinks criminals need to be coddled like a newborn baby. Violent criminals should be hung like in the old west, not put in a prison where they are allowed to live out thier lives with free medical treatment and cable TV. It is due time that people are held resposible for thier actions. The crime rate in the USA is higher than any developed nation in the world. People who blame the crimes on society are just as guilty as the criminals they defend the actions of.

Gee whiz, that's even enough time for the rumor mill to get things right.

Speaking of the rumor mill - the damage done in this sorry mess will have a larger-than-normal footprint, I think.

Prayers and thoughts to the families of all involved.

Wait 48 hours, who are you kidding?!?! Rumors are going to leak sooner or later. I live almost 9 hours away from Baraga County and I heard within an hour of the tragedy, word travels fast. I don't think leaving the community in the dark about a murderer on the loose is going to solve anything, but I do know one thing, if I knew that there was a suspected murderer on the loose I would stay home to stay out of harms way.

FACT NEWS ONLY PLEASE

First, where's the person who claims that everywhere in the UP that something bad happens is considered "UP's version of Detroit"?

Second, I'm so sorry for both of the families of these people involved. Time will slowly heal your pain. My heart is with you in this tough time.

If not for this "trumped up", "starving" media coverage, you would have nothing to be commenting on, would you???
Some of like to be kept informed about what is going on.
Instead of being critical, bitching about what would or could have happened, why dont you think about the victim and her family?

Prayers to the victims family

Posted by E H, Yooper - Friday, January 23, 2009 at 10:37 a.m.

First and foremost, I want to send my prayers and condolences to the family of the victim. I also want to thank the responding Law Enforcement agencies on a job WELL DONE! If it wasn't for their heroic actions, this tragedy could have turned into a bigger disaster. Their training and experience has proved that although this type of tragedy doesn't occur very often up in the UP, they have what it takes to make our community a safer place, and for that alone they are angels.

Job Well Done By MSP

Posted by Citizen Of Marquette, Marquette, Michigan - Friday, January 23, 2009 at 10:08 a.m.

A job well done by the Michigan State Police. Although it's probably something they didn't want to do, but had to do it to protect themselves from the subject. They used all there skills and training very well and handled the situation properly. My prayers go out to the girlfriend's family, it’s a very sad thing that happened. Domestic violence is a growing problem in the U.P and sometimes it doesn’t end very well. But the State police did a good job finding the suspect and trying to take him in.

Deadly Force Was Necessary

I'm at ease to hear this murderer met his end. The police did what they were supposed to do. Great Job! I'm sorry to hear about the innocent victim. My prayers go out to the family.

What is going on around here?

Posted by b r, republic - Friday, January 23, 2009 at 8:31 a.m.

Is the good old UP going crazy or is the media coverage too starved for news? Our family was at a basketball tournament in Saginaw last year and the maid in the motel told us that they had their 25th murder so far this year and it was only January 25th or one per day. If this low life was not killed he would of had a sensational trial with all the trumped up media coverage and he would have been receiving love letters in prison for the rest of his life.
