HOUGHTON -- A group of students at Michigan Technological University hope their nano-satellite will beat out nine other universities in a competition that will launch the winner's satellite into space.

The 80-student Aerospace Enterprise Team is in the final stages of assembling the nanosatellite they've spent the last two years designing and testing.

They were given $110,000 by the Air Force Research Lab.

The satellite will acquire, image, track, and monitor resident space objects.

"We'll have a system on board where the computer will automatically detect where the object is in the field of view of the camera," said team leader Jeff Katalenich.  "It will automatically move the satellite around to keep it in the field of view."

The University Nanosat Program Competition is in January.
